Fascinating extension for #sabres defenceman Mattias Samuelsson: Seven years at $4.29M AAV.

He's played 54 career NHL games.

I really like this signing for Buffalo. They are banking on his upside and potential and he's clearly banking on security. None the less, I really like Samuelsson and his game. He's not an offensive player by any means but will definitely be a key shutdown guy for them for years to come.

From what I've read... sounds like a good number for top4 stay-at-home D-man that can allow an offensive-upside (Dahlin, Power) guy to make a rush.
He's 2nd round drafted player and every step of way he's developed and adjusted. Big guy.

In fantasy cap leagues... this number sucks for owners.
But in real NHL world, this will probably be solid contract number for both player and team.

I think it's hilarious he signed a 7yr $30m deal before scoring his first goal lol. I know it's not his game, but that's gotta be a record high deal before scoring an NHL goal.

I think it's also funny that his Cap hit for the deal is actually $29,999,998. I don't get why his Cap hit is $2 less than his Total Salary on CapFriendly

It's funny reading the twitter comments. So many are saying "who"? If you don't know, you probably shouldn't question if it's a good signing or not. Maybe watch a few of their games.

Clearly he's not a household name because of his style of play. He's not a big offensive guy and that's not why they locked him up long term. They locked him up because he's going to be a big piece of the pie for them in their upswing. Hockey is played at two ends of the ice and it's just as much about keeping the puck out as it is putting it in the other end. He's going to be a big part of the keeping the puck out for years to come once he gains that experience.

You need to watch a few more Sabres games. I've tried acquiring him in a few of my keeper leagues for the peripherals and the upside. Needless to say, in cap leagues, I probably wont chase him anymore. He's definitely a better real life player vs fantasy.

Hmm. Can't say I wasn't surprised as heck, but I'm ok with it too given where the Sabres are in the process. He's basically the polar opposite style player of Dahlin. So if he pans out as the Sabres project (the risk the team is taking vs. the risk the player is taking that he'll be underpaid in a few years), a core 3 on the blueline of Dahlin, Power and Samuelsson for the better part of the next decade is a heck of a start and nice mix of playing styles.

Now, to address the goaltending....
