^Hey 4T2... I'm starting to think your Bruins are a little to blame for this.
Here's an article that references a 32-year old Bergeron... which puts the article at 2017-18 season:
    https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/...erappreciated/

    Ctrl+F for "bumper"
Bergeron: “We call it the bumper spot on the power play, the middle man in the slot,” Bergeron says, chatting on the final Saturday of the regular season. “It’s one of those positions where you need to have a quick release.”

By the way he says "We call it"... it was fairly new term for the Bruins in spring of 2018 (April 7, 2018 - to be precise. Bergeron would turn 33 in the summer of 2018, now 37 after his summer b-day this 2022.)
Pengwin7 shakes fist at a favourite player.

*Task for you: Who was Bruins coach and PP-specialist coach in 2017-18 season?

Working back in Bruins history to find more "bumper" references:
    Oct. 10, 2017: https://www.nbcsports.com/boston/bru...weekend-return
    ...

Your boy Bergy? Oh no! No wonder you are looking so hard for someone to blame. I'm thinking it was probably Joe Sacco or maybe Jay Pandolfo at that point for powerplay coach. That would have been when Cassidy took over as head coach from Julien as well
    Without me, it's only "aweso".

    So... my latest...

I went to twitter and put in "bumper bergeron".
Tweets go back to Oct.12, 2015.
Some guy named Gerald Jimes had this tweet "Is anyone surprised that someone with such great ice vision is a great bumper on the PP? Bergeron you beauty."

Then, on Oct 21, 2015 - apparently Don Sweeney is referenced by one tweeter.
And on same night, several people tweeted to criticize one "Pierre" about calling Bergeron "The Bumper"

    So... this is all pre-Cassidy.
It goes back into the Claude Julien days and 2015 NHL season opening...

    Now... is "Pierre"... THE Pierre?
And how do we get access to that broadcasted Bruins game from October 21, 2015?!?

I feel like this clip was JUST ABOUT to hear it come out of Pierre McGuire's mouth... but the clip cuts out...

All of this is after the link I shared earlier though. Would be curious how it made its way to the NHL level as it was certainly "bumping" around at lower hockey levels before that.

    Oh, for sure.
I think the term existed somewhere... minor hockey, OHL... and then maybe Pierre McGuire picked it up from his many conversations with hockey folk... and brought it into his NHL broadcasts.
(Other possibility is that it existed internally for Bruins powerplay - that Pierre interviewed/spoke with somebody about it that day - and was determined to work it into his comments during the game.)

    I don't know. That's worth investigating.
But there is several (BOS fan) sources on twitter annoyed with McGuire's use of it on that Oct.21st, 2015 game night!

And yet... by Nov, Dec of 2015... Bs fans were using the term themselves about Bergeron's position on the PP1 unit.
It seems this may have been the take-off point for the term's use in the NHL.

But yeah... how it got into the NHL (McGuire or Bruins coaches... and where THEY got it from)... is still worth investigating!
