Clearly they're banking on him long term to be a leader there. Good for him. If he can continue what he did last year, this will be a good contract. He's only 24 so they're buying his prime years.

I didn't bother clicking on this thread because I didn't think it was anything too noteworthy. Then I saw the headline on TSN... the kid has had one good season. One! That's quite the gamble

For that matter, Kadri had one great year too. And he’s 31. Predictably he’ll decline. It’s like putting your roulette chips on double-zero. Thompson is 24. Gamble, sure, but his best is ahead.

7M$ isn't that bad if the cap goes up significantly. If he regresses to a 40-50 pt guy though, it won't look that great. I have faith in him though, hopefully he's up to play at that contract.

Kadri has had more than 1 good season. he had 44 pts in 48 games in a lockout-shortened season and several others with either 30 goals or a 55+ point pace. He will decline for sure so hes probably going to be overpaid for the last 2-4 seasons of his deal but at least its understandable as he was a ufa so some overpayment is required

For Tage hes had 1 good season in which he is still a year out from being a RFA. to me at minimum it looks like buffalo signed him long-term a year too early. if he puts up another good season like 40 goal 80 points then sure he'll get 8-9m aav next offseason but the downside risk of him being overpaid at 7m AAV is certainly there. i hope he simply performs so it looks like a great deal for the sabres instead of having 2 albatross contracts on that team

Could you imagine how much he'd be getting this summer if he had only signed a one year deal, assuming he keeps up this pace? Buffalo came out smelling like a rose on this one so far.
