He was an assistant coach for a couple of NHL teams after he retired from playing, then hired for a "Hockey operations advisor" with the Rangers in 2021. First management role in any form.
His brother is Chris Grier, the Miami Dolphins GM since 2016.

Wow... big week coming for Mr.Grier.
Gotta do some drafting... find a coach.
I hope he does well - because San Jose has some albatross contracts and that aging D.
Not sure what he's gotta do to ditch those contracts. He might have to go Bill Guerin-style on those guys!

Hope this goes well for him. San Jose (both as a team and as an organization) are kind've a mess right now and that's a tough situation for a first time GM. Hopefully he is granted some patience and stability.

He says no rebuild. Good luck with that. San Jose has a ton of terrible contracts. Not sure he could offload them even if he did commit to a rebuild.

It's well reported that the owner doesn't want a rebuild and doesn't think the fans would accept one. Which basically means the owner has no long term vision (Calgary has the same problem). Also reported that it needed to be a former player for San Jose. So the pool was limited to former Sharks who would tell the owner what he wanted to hear. What I hope doesn't happen is if Grier fails it is a step back for other diversity hires. Most stats show that minorities get fewer opportunities and as importantly they get fewer second chances, and the entire set up in San Jose is doomed to fail unless there is some patience and a change in mindset from the owner.

I did not realize his brother and dad had such great management experience in the NFL. It's nice to see, but I hope they did their due diligence here and aren't making this a PR hire.
