This does seem a bit different. Presumably Russia wouldn't have let Kaprizov leave Russia if he was in trouble. They would have detained him at the airport. A report I read said he was denied entry to the US twice so two times he was able to leave Russia.

If you have an NHL contract, but your visa has expired, then you can move in the US-Canada-Mexico triangle with the Form I-797. But if you went outside - for example, home to Russia - then they will not let you back. There you already fill in the P1 visa form. So, it is necessary to visualize the need for registration again, it takes some time.

Why Kirill was refused twice? Most likely, he did it unexpectedly and did not collect all the documents. Or he applied for urgent visualization and was refused. But this should not be a headache for a player, this is the job of an agent who receives very solid money under a contract with one of the main stars of the NHL.

It's out-of-date news and doesn't even appear to be accurate.

Indeed. The latest reporting by Russo says Kaprizov tried to return to the US twice, and was turn away both times by Americans (and suspects a visa issue).

he does have a valid nhl contract so the wording / mechanism of the visa must be the issue. hopefully he can hang out in like mexico or western europe until training camp

The Atheletic did a major story on this earlier this month. It's not just Russian players, it's all European players. They need a special visa for the US and Canada and couldn't get it due to backlogs at consulates. So basically there was an exception made last year. But what happens this year is anyone's guess.
