Who is the best player in the NHL right now?
Connor McDavid or Cale Makar?
McDavid is the easy answer, and probably still the right answer. But the fact that this can be a serious question/conversation blows my mind. What Makar has done this season is absolutely incredible.

If I'm building a team around anyone, I'm taking Makar.
Best player is McDavid.
Makar I can get the argument from a GM saying he wants to build around Makar since he's a RH defenseman that can play on the left side and is a crazy good player. He's under a better contract (9m, 5more yrs). I get that part of the debate. He's a better Erik Karlsson in his prime. My fear is how he'd be able to keep that production up, where as McDavid and being a forward has a higher chance of keeping the production up throughout his career.
There's like 1,000s threads of "Is Player X better than McDavid?" or a few yrs ago the same thing with Crosby. It's pretty clear when it's the same player being asked "is he still the best player?" it's a very high chance they still are.

I also think McDavid is still the best player.
But how far is Makar from him? Do you think he’s close?
Would you take him at number 2 or there is still other players you would choose before Makar?
I think Matthews could be considered #2 but there's nothing wrong with Makar over him there, either. C and D are probably the two positions you want an elite player so you're really splitting hairs there.
look at it this way, if you had no talent around either of those guys, how many more games would McDavid win you than Makar? I would say quite a bit.
I traded Mcdavid for Makar+++ (one of the plus is Kaprizov) and im very happy with return i got but still, i traded best player in NHL by quite a margin thats why i got few top level pieces...

McDavid is the right answer. Makar would need to regularly post 100 pt seasons as a Dman to be in the best player conversation and be within spitting distance of McDavid's seasonal point totals. But at the same time McDavid could take a step and start posting 140-150pt seasons. It will be exciting to watch as both players are entering their prime years.
McDavid is insane. I was just looking at hockeydb right now and you have to go back to the 2009 entry draft to find someone with more career points than him. (Someone want to guess who that is?). Nobody from 2010 (with a 5 seasons edge) to 2014 has been able to produce at his pace. And he's missed time in there too. Remarkable what he's doing. Next year, barring injuries, he'll already cross the 800-point plateau as a 26 year-old! Heck, from his own draft year, he has more assists than anyone has points. And that includes an over PPG player like Marner.
So yeah, Makar is great but McDavid is on another level right now.
McDavid has been so amazing and dominant for so long that people have just been glossing over it lately. He just won the Art Ross with 123 points and I barely heard his name getting thrown around in the MVP talks. We EXPECT him to lead the league in scoring every year so nobody cares when he does.
