I don't think anyone thought this wasn't a good signing - it was pretty clear this was a steal for the Oilers who pounced on an opportunity. Low risk high reward signing.

I don't think it was a shocking move that an uncreative GM got the OK from an owner who has been accused of offer money to a brazilian actress/model in exchange for sexual favours to sign Kane. It's also less of a surprise that Kane is performing well on a team that has little scoring depth, but high end talent that he gets to play with and if he didn't perform he would be off to Europe next yr.
