Feels like 2020 all over again.
Will be interesting to see the schedule and the whole Olympic thing play out.
Call me old one more time.

I'll be shocked if the NHL players go to the Olympics.
The league has given the teams an additional 2 days off, and how many games actually got cancelled because of the additional days off?
This is a pretty weak and slow action move by the NHL in my opinion. Should have happened on Friday and the league would have to reschedule like 8 additional games and they get 4 additional days.

Sources confirm the February break in the #NHL schedule, originally for the Olympics, will now be used to play make up games for all games taken off the board.

So all this planning has one big giant flaw in it: it assumes that somehow the Omicron wave will be under control within a week. What happens when cases are still increasing when the league resumes play on the 27th and more and more players are added to COVID protocol and more games are postponed? This is not the final plan. Things will change and the NHL will need to adapt quickly.
I can't promise I'll try but I'll try to try.
It does buy them time to get players back. Something like 60+ will return by the time the league restarts.
I'm guessing their hope is the heightened protocols, and the return of players will slow it down to keep the league going. Maybe the league will re-introduce taxi-squads which help a ton.
Also, maybe this helps the league in the terms that the next high flux of cases could be (lets say) late January, they've just bought a couple of weeks to pull in data and fully judge Omicron. But you are right, if they don't use the time they've bought themselves in a beneficial way then it's a waste.

The answer is they just reign things in, probably going back to measures similar to if not on a par with 2020, which was before vaccination was even available. Thankfully when it's been reported it seems that most players have had mild symptoms, if any, so hopefully even if they continue to play there won't be more long haul cases like Marco Rossi.

This pause is great for my Eichel trade - I may be able to get a few extra games from him when he finally plays! I'm a glass half full kind of guy.
