So basically a very similar contract that the Jays just gave Gausman. Looks like Jays management wanted Gausman more than Ray.

    I'd rather have Ray.

Reigning AL Cy Young winner Robbie Ray and the Seattle Mariners are finalizing a five-year, $115 million contract with an opt-out after the third season, sources familiar with the deal tell ESPN.

I'll side with the Jays on the fact they've gone after Gausman 2yrs in a row, and were trying to get him last yr before going with Ray. They offered Gausman last yr a 3yr deal too so they def see something with him.

Ray, what a bet on yourself deal. Guy completely turned himself around. Congrats on the big deal. Mariners...I dunno what they're doing. I guess this is like when the Jays signed Ryu. Get a vet leader for your younger pitching core, and they have a young group of fielders coming up. Acquired Frazier for their IF.

There was also questions on Ray's vaccination status I think? My buddy told me this might have influenced the Jays decision a bit, but I can't find this on twitter.

Jeff Blair said Ray is unvaccinated.

And reported by CBC in early November, professional athletes will not be permitted to enter Canada as of Jan15th.

Canada had an exemption in place for athletes, but the NHL overruled that exemption but NBA, and MLB didn't. The league implemented stricter rules around unvaccinated players though.
