Default Quinn Hughes vs. Moritz Seider

In a H2H daily start salary cap league who is the more valuable player to own: Quinn Hughes or Moritz Seider? The cap hit of potential multicat stud Seider or the PPP points and less peripherals of offensive stud Hughes.

In a vacuum, ignoring current fantasy roster, which player is the better own?

G, A, STP (PPP+SHP), SOG, HIT, BLKS, PIM, TOI
    25 Roster (3C, 3RW, 3LW, 6D, 3G, 2U, 5Reserve)
25 Farm (up to 99 games)
    Cap = $102M
    H2H Daily starts
    Unlimited roster moves from farm

    Thank you in advance.

Hughes. Seider will give you some cap relief if that is important. But in a vacuum I want Hughes' production and known skill set at this level.

I like Hughes here. Seider at his heights will likely beat Hughes in PIM/BLK/HIT and maybe by a little in TOI. Hughes will outperform Seider in the other categories. And the categories for which Hughes will be better will be more difficult to obtain.

3 years of Seider on his ELC number ($863k) makes him the better choice here, IMO.
I expect Q.Hughes to get $7m per... and in a hits/blocks league... you can get more stats out of a $7m forward... so you do it that way.

Quinn Hughes' lowest fantasy value is going to be in a HIT/BLK/PIM cap-style league.
And... this appears to be that league.

I think this is close in cap league based on production / $…somif u got cap issues u want Seidel…otherwise u want Hughes

Assuming both are healthy, Seider until his ELC runs out, for multiple reasons.

As Pengwin said, Hughes needs to score like a forward of the same cap hit, as he's not going to give you the grit cats. He should get ice time. If he can do that, he's fine. However, I'd expect Seider to be a very good deal at that ELC amount.

Also you can move Seider up & down from farm freely to get more games in until he hits 99. He's your guy.

I lean more towards Seider. Hughes has very limited upside in multicat leagues - he'll pound out assists and PPP all day but doesn't offer much more than that. He needs to produce insane point totals to even crack the top 20 defenders in a league like that.

The next knock on Hughes is the upcoming contract after what Heiskanen ($8.45m) and Makar ($9M) signed for. I think with Hughes we're looking at a defender who will make a top-5 salary but be a bit of a powerplay specialist when it comes to fantasy.

Seider on the other hand obviously has a long way to go, but his upside is much more substantial. I also don't think we'll see him come in and light it up offensively like Hughes had, meaning his first contract after his ELC might be more manageable. I think with Seider you're looking at a development curve that is more like Ekblad or Hedman so the wait for his peak will be quite a while still. That said if he can give you that multicat production, he may just end up being as valuable as Hughes within a short time. The door's also wide open in Detroit

I don’t really know what to expect out of Seider and the way the Wings will use him. I think his first year will be a slow learning type of year and he will go up from there. Hughes is explosive and if he gets double digits in goals at a consistent pace then I’d have to go with him even with a high cap hit. Also depends where you are in your league. If you will be a contender then Hughes is your guy. If you’re in for a longer haul, Seider would suit you best. Don’t think you can go wrong with either tho if all systems are go with both.

All right! Thanks for all the replies. Tough choice that is polarizing. Now vs then. Grit vs pucks-in-net. Contracts per dollar vs production. Gonna call this one (for this specific format) a tie. Can’t do wrong, just depends on what type of player/contract that is needed at the moment.

EDIT: rep given where is could be

    Bingo!

Points only, he holds excellent value. Multi-cat, not so much.

    I prefer Seider.
