I don't think carrying 5M in dead cap space for 5 years is a good move for Seattle. Teams that acquire long bad contracts (including LTIR) are constantly paying to move them afterwards. Things change quickly. Seattle will need that 5M later.

I just don't see there being any deal to keep Price, unless it's something crazy like Seattle pick him and trade back.
Just have to see where the pieces land I guess.

Ya, but was the don't worry message directed to Habs fans, or Price family :P

The key is Price agreed to waive and be left unprotected. He would only do that if he knew the outcome would be good for him.

I haven't been able to find the rule as of yet that states how long Seattle must hold onto a pick before being allowed to trade them back to the same team they picked that player from. That, to me, would obviously help to add potential as to why Price was exposed. Otherwise, Bergy sees this as a very rare and only real chance they can move Price (and contract) without P. Roy type blowback. He can claim that Price wanted to be closer to home etc. and out of respect, he granted exposing him. In the meantime, Bergy knows that an Allen for 2 more seasons and $10.5 Mil in the bank is better than Price for 5 more years and $0 in the bank. They have to retool quick before Suzuki, Caulfield and Romanov come off ELC contracts.

I think there is less than zero chance that Seattle takes that contract.

There's no rules that says they can't trade Price back right away. They aren't allowed to retain salary to trade him back is the CBA rule.

sources say Carey Price's health has clouded the selection process. It's too soon to say for certain, but he may miss significant time next season with a hip injury.

There was a fair amount of media chatter yesterday morning about Dreidger being on the verge of signing a multiyear deal with the Krak. That went completely silent when the Price news hit and it hasnt picked back up at all.
Driedger for $7 million cheaper than Price makes getting Landy and Dougie very doable from a long-term cap standpoint. You can add Kahkonen and Vanecek as expansion picks. The injury news makes it difficult to see a long-term commitment to Price happening.

You always have to account for Price missing chunks of time during the regular season. The Kraken should know that.

Kraken also just spent $650 million in expansion fees. Price's $11m bonus is really insignificant to them in all the considerations. Price is going to miss most of this upcoming season with a hip injury. That coupled with his contract will keep the Kraken looking else where.

I find this weird. It made me change my whole planned expansion simulation.

One the one hand, protecting Jake Allen over Price is batshit crazy, unless you already have a handshake deal on what's going to happen. I understand why they'd try to get out of the contract, but they should be expecting to have lots of LTIR next season.

On the other, Seattle can do a lot of things, as they have a completely clean cap sheet right now, and Montreal's options weren't very appealing before this. Kulak? Danault - who is a UFA? Selecting Price moves the needle for fan interest and team quality. They can also acquire him, then flip him. It just makes too much sense.

I believe Danault is going to the Kraken.

    Conversation between Bergevin and Francis

MB: Weber's out all of next year, career might be over. We're not going to protect him but don't bother picking him because it's really really bad.
RF: No worries, we're picking Allen.
    MB: No.
    RF: Yes.
    MB: We're protecting Allen.
    RF: OK, we're picking Price.
MB: Well, you know, he's got a bad hip and he might need surgery on his knee...
    RF: What about Danault?
    MB: Broken neck.
    RF: Byron?
    MB: Paralyzed.
    RF: Cale Fleury?
    MB: Two missing legs.
    RF: Kulak?
    MB: Deceased.
RF: Fine we're picking Charles Hudon.

It's amazing how much (all of a sudden) the media is pushing Price's injuries, if he will play at all next season and his regular season woes. MB is working the machine pretty hard so he can keep his goalies. I think it's as simple as a game of poker. Francis has 2 bullets and MB has 7-3 off suit. Cards were dealt and MB went all in. Easy call for Francis. Unless MB gave him a few bills under the table *wink wink. Then he folds.
Call me old one more time.
