Toronto has also been linked to Lehner in the past.
I mean, they did trade for him once, even if it was only for 30 seconds on paper.

Friedman mentions the Vegas goalies a couple of times - once linking them to Edmonton and then later on to New Jersey. Just seems like there's a little bit of smoke there worth keeping an eye on. Last summer it was MAF, now there seems to be buzz around both. Maybe nothing happens but they're two high calibre goalies and Vegas may want to move around money.
Worth keeping in mind Vegas isn't part of the expansion draft so any deal would not be about protection.
Also...this article apparently says Chicago is kicking tires on MAF. (paywall) https://theathletic.com/2703074/2021...shared_article

I've also heard Pens are interested in bringing MAF back.

i would be very surprised if they traded either Lehner or Fleury. the only way i can see it happening is to facilitate a deal for an eichel-like acquisition where they need the cap space. otherwise, they needed both goalies this season. the schedule wont be as condensed next season but it is still valuable having 2 good goalies.
One day I will quit fantasy hockey, today is not that day.
Based on how the playoffs went they need to and will trade one or the other.

I can only see that if Vegas (or a 3rd team gets paid off) eats 50% of his salary - & Vegas doesn't have the cap space to swallow $3.5m
Buyout Cap hit to Vegas: $3m in 21/22 - $2m in 22/23
Would be cheaper on the cap in 21-22 to buy him out than retain 50%. Frees up $4m cap space immediately.
We've only seen teams willing to 3rd party retain salary in deals at the trade deadline.
If a team like Detroit - is checking down on their rebuild - moving out Bertuzzi etc. then perhaps they would eat $3.5 with their $48m in cap space.
If I'm Yzerman - I'm wanting a pick and a prospect to do this regardless of the state of my team in 21/22.
Vegas can't afford to retain anything
Pittsburgh can't afford the $7m in salary - Pitts also lacks prospects/picks to really pull this off - when they need to begin looking at re-stocking.
This would seem the only option if they don't just buy him out or bring him back
I doubt MAF wants to go and play elsewhere.
I mean, when Vegas & Pitts play - he still sneaks in the Penguins dressing room to pull pranks on Sid and Geno
Buyout makes the most sense considering the above scenario hasn't been done (to my knowledge) in the NHL previously.

I have read the possibility of moving Lehner while extending MAF on a cheaper deal. Maybe Vegas likes what they see in Logan Thompson as a backup. Although Lehner has a NMC.

I don't think any Leaf fan would be upset if the Leafs acquired either of the Vegas goalies, depending on the trade. But I think the Leafs organization has a pretty good head space with trades.

Well, there it is, it was indeed Chicago for MAF.
Now I just wonder if MAF plays or retires. Maybe Toews and Kane give him a ring to get him on board.

Some part of me wonders if a guy like Jon Toews said "Listen... I just don't have a lot of motivation if we don't have a goalie that can win us some games. Also... Duncan is old."
And. Queue the offseason moves.
