Habs pulled Perry off the trash heap this year and he's skating top 6 mins and doing well. These sorts of players are available every year at bargain prices. This is just a terrible GM being terrible. Awful contract.
    ^ Bang on.
Tough to route for the home team when it continues to be mismanaged with brutal contracts. Hopefully at some point they get out from under all these contracts before wasting the prime years of Pettersson, Boeser, Hughes, Demko.

    Spezza is a better example.

But age is a huge factor here. Spezza and Perry are both tail end of careers & are taking contracts to stay in the NHL.

How often do you see 28yr old players take pay-cuts?
What needs to be factored in - on top of his 11pts in 33 games is his 45 points in 69 games last year. Which was a career high in a shortened NHL season.

He took 500k AAV to stay. he likely gets close to 4 on the open market.

I think the deal itself is fine. just wrong team - wrong direction by Benning.

If Pearson puts up 20-20 next year 3.25 doesn't look too bad. Canucks were a tire-fire this year in general.

I don't think any team gives Tanner Pearson $4M/y this offseason. I don't think any other team gives him $3M/y this offseason.

This list of comparables is like a who's who of all the contracts we collectively laugh at.

Well.. are these actually players comparable to Pearson? or is this a horrible comparison list to begin with? Sobotka, Higgins, Raymond? 110% irrelevant to compare.

That might be the most flawed comparable list I've ever seen... Mind you, Pearson kind of stands out as the one player you want to own based on that list.

We can better compare Pearson to all active forwards between $3m - $3.5m AAV rather than sifting through Eaves & Mason Raymond.

Now we're looking at Ellers, Clutterbuck, Komarov, Connolly & Rust

(amazingly Van has Beagle, Roussell, Ferland, also on this list)

    3.65m - 4m list of forwards:

    https://www.capfriendly.com/browse/a...650000-4000000

Pearson would not stand out as drastically overpaid on this list either.

Exactly. So the contract isn't that bad!

Id rather Pearson than most of those at the same point in there career. Stat cherry picking going on here so no point in conversing.

Tanner Pearson, reportedly extending 3x~$3.2M with VAN is a below-average offensive middle six winger who turns 29 this summer. You know, the kind of player you just gotta lock up and protect in an expansion draft. #Canucks

    JFresh @JFreshHockey 22h

Usually when the Canucks make a bad move I think "ok, I see what they think they're doing here." I have legitimately no idea what the Canucks are thinking on this one.

me: you know he's going to sign more right

    Benning fans: nuh uh
    JFresh @JFreshHockey Apr 8

Brett Connolly, acquired by CHI, is a zero-calorie scorer who hasn't been scoring this year. #Blackhawks

    JFresh @JFreshHockey 21h

It should be pointed out that a player very similar to Pearson but with much better goal scoring (and one fewer year on his contract) just got moved as a cap dump. Literally this morning.
    JFresh @JFreshHockey 21h

(I know someone's going to jump on me about the goal scoring thing. Both players are in slumps this year. Since 2018-19, Connolly's goals per 60 rate is 1.05, Pearson's is 0.77. Connolly scores 20 in bottom six minutes, Pearson scores 20 in second line minutes)

I would rather have all of these players by a drastic margin save for Victor Rask, IE another contract that is consistently laughed at.

Horrible timing, horrible move restriction clause.

The cost for the player isn't truly bad, and term isn't terrible, but it's not the right fit for the Canucks, as others have said. They also had enough guys with term to meet the number of guys who weren't protected just fine.

Time to go change my Canucks protection list for expansion.

Tanner Pearson is #200 in total points in the NHL in the last 3 years (forwards and D men). https://www.quanthockey.com/nhl/seas...ers-stats.html
Tanner Pearson is #191 in salary in the NHL (forwards only with new contract, #327 with D and G considered), along side Cogliano, Buch, Faksa, Vrana... https://www.spotrac.com/nhl/rankings/average/forward/
Tanner Perason is #220/300 in the frozentools fantasy ranking value.
It's not outrageous people. There are better things to hate on Benning for than this, like Ive said, Im not a fan either but this is just people being bored and nit picking.
