With tandems you get all starts for a team (bonus points if the team is very good) and if one gets injured the other will see more action.
Of course owning several high-end goalies is better but that's not realistic in most leagues.
I’ve seen a lot of talk about rostering extra goalies this year, with specific focus on having a tandem. What is the reason for a tandem to be more beneficial than goalies from different teams?
My fear is if something like Dallas is going through now happens to the team of your tandem, you lose them both.

So here is my dilemma, I currently have Khudobin, Merzlikins, and Sorokin, but Varlamov is actually available in our 12 team H2H league. I don't really want to carry 4 goalies, but is securing the NYI tandem worth parting with Khudobin or Merzlikins?

this year 4 goalies probably isn’t that bad of an idea. I’d snag varly and prob drop kubalik. You could then try and trade one of your other goalies. Outside of dobby, all your other goalies are in a split timeshare you might not even make your min goalie gp if you have those

The way things are going( and I don’t see this as a one year thing going forward,) teams ah e been building a strong tandem with the play being more even if you have the right guys. Tandems are the way of the future anyways so why not start building one yourself and grab Varley. He should be owned.

It really comes down to your league scoring. If the 1b G gains as much, more, or is more consistently providing the points than a skater... Well then the 1b takes the roster spot. In a points league, H2H like mine, it works out that way.

I'd rather carry a 3rd goalie that starts on a bad team then wasting a spot on a backup that may get 30-40% of the starts. Remember, their team doesn't have to be the on with covid to have a game postponed. If your H2H stats require 4 goalie starts that could kill your week, especially if that team only had 2 games that week to begin with.
Edit: That changes a bit in a 12 team league where starters are grabbed earlier. Sometimes the best you can do is a good tandem, Like Varly/Sorokin, for example.

Hell yes. The NYI tandem could be the best own in the league. You don’t have SAVES as a catagory so that is even better. Lock up NYI and be guaranteed* to have enough start each week and well above average GAA and SV%. Stick Khudobin in the other G slot. Keep Elvis if you want to really insulate yourself. Better yet, try to flip Seguin for Ben Bishop and stick him on your IR. Come playoff time you will be set in net with multiple options to move forward with.

Well hopefully you didn't read this today.
It heavily depends on league settings. Fantasy leagues where it's just wins & shutouts, you want both volume and a good team. If you have GAA & SV% as well, you want better quality teams and goalies, and care less about volume, and that goes extra if you don't use wins - which are totally a team stat. (At least in hockey, goalies do generally ply 100% of the game they win, other sports are worse with pitcher wins and in football the most junk stat ever - quarterback wins)
You also only lose them both if it's weekly format as opposed to season long. Season long, as long as games are made up - and they mostly should be - you'll be fine.

Taking tandems is the "safe" option. You know that 99% of the time you will have 1 starter and 1 back up. If you go with a starter from one team and a back up from the other team, your starter could lose the #1 role and you are left with 2 back ups OR your back up could take over the #1 role and you then have 2 starters. It's more risk and more potential reward to not go with the tandem.
Every league is different so you need to know whether it is better to increase or decrease the risk in your specific league.
