I'd assume based on an NHL roster position....

    Teams with 2G+1Taxi
    - NHL Goalie gets hurt. If he can't backup, the team needs to fill that role. Taxi squad goalie gets called in. If the team leaves the hurt goalie as DTD you still have 3 goalies on your roster. However now your NHL Roster is over 23players so now you need to move a player to the taxi squad.
    - IF the goalie is going to miss extended time. The hurt goalie goes on IR, taxi squad goalie gets called up. There is no need to send a player to the taxi squad because the roster is balanced
-Once the hurt goalie is ready to play again. Your 3G would either stay on your roster, leaving the sent-down-player from before on your Taxi squad. Or the 3G gets sent down and through waivers before hitting the taxi squad

    Teams with 3G+0Taxi
    - NHL Goalie gets hurt. If he can't back up, you have a goalie on your NHL roster already no biggie.
    - NHL Goalie gets hurt and will miss extended time. Goalie goes on IR. 3G moves into the backup role. AHL goalie gets called up to the taxi squad. From what I have heard, moving from the AHL to taxi squad has NO WAIVER needs. So Leafs can move Hutch from AHL to Taxi and back down to AHL with no need to move him through waivers.

Once they go through waivers, they dont have to go through them again. So if Dell was sent through waivers and clears, and Campbell gets hurt, Dell can "come up" from the taxi squad and backup Andersen. When Campbell is healthy again, Dell gets moved back to taxi squad but does not have to clear waivers again.

this tells me they dont wnat to loose Dell to waivers and they dont really anticipate many line up changes unless there is injury so they sacrificing one of 3 reserve spots for a goalie...one will go to Lethonen and another to a F im assuming.

    Yeah... it's possible TOR's full taxi-squad could be waivers-exempt.
So that just may be the reason for Dell on the main.

    *Robertson, F (Waivers Exempt)
    *Engvall, F (Waivers Exempt)
    *Barbanov, F (Waivers Exempt)
    *Lehtonen, D (Waivers Exempt)
    *Sandin, D (Waivers Exempt)
*(not sure - but maybe Adam Brooks, who does require waivers - but would likely not be claimed.)

That only happens if the player goes through waivers within 30days or plays/dresses for 9 games. Once it's 10 games or over 30 days, they are waiver eligible again.

Small chance a 3rd string goalie would be up for 30days/10games but could be a reason some teams

Does the call up being for injury/an "emergency call up" change these rules?

Just read a few interesting articles on theathletic.

Several people (James Mirtle, perhaps, being the lead) have realized that NHL teams can "accrue cap space" by having a bare-bones NHL roster.
This means they only roster the base 18 skaters and 2 goalies (20) for a game on their opening roster.
And they go with a set 20player group for as long as they can... while accruing cap space for the 3 players that they are not carrying.

    Why?
Because with the traveling AHL taxi-squad, it is very easy to flex-up a Waivers-Exempt player, whenever needed.
So the Leafs, who have several very solid waiver-exempt players, those guys will stay on the 6-player taxi squad, until needed.
They'll be called up for a game, and dropped right back down.

What this means in deeper fantasy leagues - is that the amount of "PRO" roster NHL players could "thin"... if teams are carrying just 20... or 21.

Expect to see several teams roster just 20 (not 23) on their opening rosters.
Reason being: Cap Space Accrual due to having off-roster guys directly available (Taxi-Squad).

We'll see how many GMs are hip to this.
But I think having a taxi-squad of waivers-exempt (younger) players... is going to be quite valuable for teams.

    re: Leafs.
There was a point made about how the Leafs had both Pickard & McElhinney vultured from them, via waivers, a season or two ago.
This - therefore - is Dubas' apprehension about waiving Dell.

It's also possible that they try to waive Dell once other teams have rosters in place.
Teams won't want to clog up their pro/taxi-squad with a 4th goalie... which makes waiving Dell a better "roster transaction" after the season starts.
Better risk at getting him down.

Ideally though, it's in Dubas' best interest to get even the Dell contract off their formal cap space.

An emergency call up doesn't require waivers.

An emergency reason however is when an NHL team's roster is reduced to below 2G, 6D, 12F because of incapacitating injury, illness, or league suspension.

We may see emergency calls up if like your starter gets COVID and your back up is flagged because of contact tracing. So your taxi squad/3rd goalie gets called up, the 4th goalie would be the emergency recall.

@P7, I think the Leafs made moves this offseason thinking about the 20NHL roster with an additional 6 players they pay, but not on their cap. It was another way they financially flexed their muscles around the cap.

Of course, Ras/Veleno aren't Yzerman picks... and GMs are often quick to turnover other GMs players.
I would just point out on Veleno that he isn't in camp, his Euro loan was for a full season. That said, they still might not be sold on his development.

The Leafs, Habs, Sens, and Jets all have their AHL affiliate in short driving distance as well, so if they needed further AHL callups there is no quarantine and they can arrive same day.

Not 100% sure on this though. NHL needs you to quarantine when entering the team to start the season.

There might be a quarantine period for call ups, which is why there's a taxi squad. Would make a goalie positive case on the NHL roster really confusing, as I'd assume the backup would be in danger of missing games because of it too.

^Evans, Poehling, and Fleury are all waivers-exempt.
So I'll Poehling,Fleury start season on Taxi-Squad to save main cap space.
I think they carry Mete officially on roster (not waivers exempt) as D7.
