ill say grab Lafreniere, and trade him for quite a bit more than JG before season starts.
I'll have to pick between Lafreniere and Gaudreau with my first pick,
I'm in a keeper's league points only
and I'm looking to contend for a couple of years now.
Who would you pick?
Keeper's league, points only, 24 teams league Skaters: 1 pt for goal and 1 pt for assist, Goalie, 2 pts for win, + 2 pts for SO
ill say grab Lafreniere, and trade him for quite a bit more than JG before season starts.

i said before on purpose, his stock will really raise during training camp, if he plays in Junior it will go up even higher. But i do believe it will fall a bit once NHL season starts. He is not at top of pecking order, at best he is 2nd LW, maybe 3rd to start..if he scores 5 points in first 10 games may will take it as a failure. I personally think he will be an absolute stud in this league but i dont think it will happen in year one.
So imo, his absolute highest value will right before game 1 starts.

I would not pass over Lafreniere if I had the chance, even if Gaudreau is there.
Draft Laf, then trade him before the season starts. Gotta think about perceived value for trades, and that's likely when it'll be highest. It's far more common for rookies to have a slow start than for them to blow the doors off the league.

I know... my advice was after the season starts, on purpose as well.
Once the season starts and a GM who thought they could contend falls down the standings they'll decide to rebuild/tool.
To add Lafreniere they'll pay a premium. IMO You won't get that premium price for Laf. before the season starts. How well Laf. starts the season will be inconsequential to what a bottom feeder is willing to pay a contending team to acquire him.
waiting also gives OP the opportunity to see if Laf is ready off the hopper. If he puts up 75pts perhaps he doesn't want to trade him at all.
Personally, trading Lafreniere, contending or not is going to be a bad idea. A real bad idea.
