Jersey. Always been jersey. I've called soccer uniforms kits before though.
So here's today's question.
With all the talk about the retro jerseys this week, I have heard many call them jerseys and many call them sweaters.
For me, I never call them a sweater, it's always a jersey to me. What do you call them?

Jerseys. And I’m OLD enough to call them sweaters, but not from Canada, so...
Jersey.
Because that's what the other main NA sports call it... and all the jersey shops sell jerseys.
So people should call them jerseys. I'm a fan of picking a word and using it right.
Sorry sweater... you are for cold seasonal warmth, not hockey representation.
Jersey for me. Never ever called them sweaters.
Hockey players used to wear sweaters. Now they wear jerseys. Anyone calling them sweaters does so due to a disingenuous ode to the Old Hockey Man (TM) when the boys were on the pond.
Definitely jersey for me. Sweater is too old school, and I think hockey specific.

While I love the traditional use of the word sweater, todays uniform tops are no longer sweaters, they are jerseys. If the Hockey Hall of Fame calls them jerseys, then so can I.
The other question is why are hockey pants called pants when they have always been shorts with a small exception in the early 80s when Cooperalls were popular.
^Haha! Yes.
Actually one of my favourite mini-stories.
One year, one of my good buddies/teammates... his girlfriend (now wife) wanted to get him a Christmas present.
So she contacts me and says "Ty said he needs new hockey pants - I'm looking online and they are all shorts... all of them... what is he talking about - where are the pants?!"
I had to explain it to her.
I also told her "Do NOT buy hockey equipment for your man. We won't buy cosmetics for you, you don't buy hockey equipment for us."
She didn't end up buying him any hockey equipment.

Jersey for sure.

use to be sweaters. Because they were in fact wool sweaters. use to be turtlenecks too.
Once they switched from wool to polyester the term Jersey gained momentum.
I use both interchangeably. In large part - I grew up out east and my Grandfather called them sweaters... so i followed suit.
after 18yrs on the west coast I call them jersey's 99% of the time now
Can we all just adopt Minnesota's name for the hockey pant? "Breezers"

I agree with the ones who say the actually used to be sweaters.
The question is "what do you call them"? Do you say jersey or sweaters because it's funny hearing how many announcers still call them sweaters.
