    Default Makar for Pettersson

I was offered Makar for Pettersson. I’m not sure what to do with this one. One one hand I’d be pumped to get Makar, but Pettersson is my best long term keeper and not sure I have the depth to let him go

    Yikes, tough one.

Looking at your league setup, with points weighted for defensemen and a keep 8, I'd probably acquire Makar.

I would certainly first counter-offer something like Seguin or Barkov, and even add Marino or Orlov. But in the end, I'd probably still do it.

In a bubble, I'm taking Makar in your format. With the bonus to D scoring and the weighting of 6F vs 4D, defense has increased value.

I get your hesitation with your forward crop though, it is weaker than your defense.

I like the approach above, try some other combination to get Makar, but at the end of the day, I think I would still take him over Pettersson.

16tm start 6F... gotta think there's better FA options than Pavelski & Staal as well - just looking at your roster.

let's look at a basic projected stat line

    Makar 12g 40a = 52pts = 116 fpts
    Pettersson 35g 60a = 95pts = 135 fpts

Taking into account nothing else. In the periphs cats PPG - HT - OTG - SOG - Pettersson does gain more value, He's going to get more PPG opportunities.

I think most seasons we're going to see a wash or Pettersson slightly ahead.

Looking at your roster, you need Pettersson more at F. than Makar on D. Even at the 6-4 ratio

    You can't quite straight up compare a F to a D though.

You need to compare the F to a replacement level F and the D to a replacement level D.

Given 16 teams, that's 96F rostered and 64D rostered, so you'd be looking at the 97F and the 65D (or the average of guys around that range. This assumes no bench spots, which changes things, but is tough to evaluate without having access to the league).

Then it's Makar - 65D vs Pettersson - 97F. That will show you the overall benefit to your team. Unfortunately I don't know what the 65D or 97F would be in this league.

Taking a quick look at Dobbers top 300 keeper skaters that puts the 97th F at about Reilly Smith and the lowest ranked D at Vince Dunn.
    So 50 (Makar) - 23 (Dunn) = 27 and 66 (Petterson) - 54 (Smith) = 12...
    Makar the clear winner
12 team Yahoo Roto keeper (keep 3)
    9 F, 6 D; roster 3 G max
    G,A,PPP,SOG,BLKS,HITS - W,SO,SV%,Saves

D: Dahlin, Seider, Matheson, Durzi, Addison, Mintyukov
    G: Hill, Husso

Bench: L Hughes, Merzlikins, Terry, Tuch

I like the idea of the counter with Barkov and Orlov. I think he just laughs if you counter with Seguin.
I think try that counter offer before double back to the original offer.

A projection is just that. There was no mention or question on Barkov. Barkov has done it once.

had I been asked to rank:

    Barkov
    Pettersson

    ... but I wasn't

Thanks for all the replies guys. Turns out the guy was just pulling my chain to see how I valued Pettersson and has no intention to trade Makar.

Very interesting discussion though. I’d love to get Makar, but keeping Pettersson is still valuable to my team.
