Said in the CGY/WPG thread that it looked more like an ankle, and Rataylor pointed out that it could very well have been a cut Achilles.
Scheifele left the game in quite a bit of pain - it did not look good. Knee is my guess.

I think it’s almost certain to be a skate cut. I’ve seen players mess up their knees and break their ankles and they do not writhe in pain like that. Skate cuts hurt different.
Skate cuts don’t hurt - it’s a sharp clean slice - you can tell it’s bad but it doesn’t hurt much. Unless it’s into muscle. It’s a tear of some sort.

So the NHL will call it a COVID related injury?
They just showed it again on Sportsnet - knee.

There is a zero percent chance it’s a knee.
Given Maurice's response I think it actually might be knee....
“It was intentional. It was a filthy, dirty kick to the back of the leg,” Maurice said after his team dropped the series opener 4-1. “You can’t see it on the program feed, but take the blue line feed and you zoom in. He went after the back of the leg. He could have cut his Achilles. He could have ended the man’s career. It’s an absolutely filthy, disgusting hit.
Just saw the highlights and man it looked like a hockey play that went the wrong way for Scheifele. Of course, it's Tkachuk who's involved on the delivery end LOL.
Personally I didn't see it as a malicious hut from Tkachuk, just bad luck. None the less, safe to say the Scheifele is done for a bit.

Respectfully, I have to disagree about the standard response of "it's a hockey play".
Hockey is certainly a risky, violent game and players cannot reasonably expect to avoid all injuries. But what happened last night is so unnecessary that, as a fan of the game (and full disclosure, a fan of the Jets) you just have to wonder what kinds of emotional cripples are playing this sport.
In hockey, we often say a certain player "plays on the edge". In real life, when we encounter people who "play on the edge" we call them "reckless" or say "they have little regard for others and maybe even themselves." Reasonable people tend to call these people out for their stupid, risky behaviour or they may even avoid them entirely. Colloquially, we might call these reckless, thoughtless people "********".
Tkachuk is a reckless player with little regard for others on the ice. In this situation, he's going 100 mph at the boards and sees nothing but 55 on the back of the player. He should know that in that situation, unless he immediately pulls up or peels off, one of two things will happen: (1) he's going to board the other guy into next week and may cause serious injury; or (2) the player he's about to drive through the boards will be alive to the fact he's about to get drilled and, like a reasonable person, the player about to be hit will attempt to avoid the hit with the result being Tkachuk might eat glass so hard that he could suffer serious injury himself.
What happened in this case is (2).
Tkachuk should know that if Scheifele tries to turn up ice (as he did) that his natural reaction will be to shift weight back on his heels because Tkachuk will want to avoid flying into the boards himself. When you're going at that speed and shift weight back then your skate blades will pitch up in front of you. Anyone who has ever skated knows this as a fact.
Now, I don't know if Scheifele was cut, but Tkachuk's split second manoeuvre is so reckless and stupid that even if Scheifele wasn't cut and perhaps instead twisted his knee this is a situation of clearly reckless play which a reasonable observer could only conclude has a high probability of ending in injury. Tkachuk has no regard for other players on the ice and is the kind of player the NHL doesn't need. The fact he's the son of a Jet great is all the more heartbreaking.

A compelling case as presented by the 2006 champion.
