I voted for Hughes but this is going to be close.
The Calder trophy is awarded to the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition in the NHL, selected in a PWHA poll.
If the NHL regular season has closed its doors for 2019-20, let's take a look at what the trophy situation might look like. Next up, the rookies.
Last years winner was Elias Pettersson VAN
My nominees (listed alphabetically):
Quinn Hughes VAN (68-8-45-53) - Fourth in defenceman scoring, 0.779 points per game, averaged 21:53 TOI
Dominik Kubalik CHI (68-30-16-46) - LW had 30 goals (only 4 via PP), averaged 14:22 TOI
Cale Makar COL (57-12-38-50) - Seventh in defenseman scoring, 0.877 points per game, averaged 21:01 TOI
I voted for Hughes but this is going to be close.

Hughes for me...
I give it to him over Makar due to Col sheltering Makar more in game situations

I think you’re both right but Kubalik had 37 goals and potential to make 42-43 ? The hype on the 2 defensemen was deafening even back in October.

I was going to go with Makar, but I ended up voting for Hughes. I just think he's had a better rookie campaign, but it's very, very close for me. Kubalik wasn't even a consideration to be truthful; when you have a couple of defensemen who come in and play top four minutes, for me, that is so much more impressive that they have both outscored the forward on my list.
Makar:
57GP, 12G, 38A, 50pts, +12, 19PPP, 21:01TOI, 47Blks, 45hits, 34TK, 40GV, 62.3oZS%, 37.7dZS%, 7.7point share, 52.8CF%
Hughes:
68GP, 8G, 45A, 53pts, -10, 25PPP, 21:53TOI, 46Blks, 7hits, 35TK, 60GV, 58.4oZS%, 41.6dZS%, 6.5point share, 52.7FC%
This was surprisingly close. But I'll go Makar, 5pts in his final 5 games vs Hughes 2pts in the final 5 games did it for me. However with Makar's injuries and Hughes late season surge with voters recency bias makes Hughes primed for the win.
Makar got scheduled for sure, but I'll still vote for Makar. It's like a 55/45 split though.

How often do defensemen win this award? And this year there are two very suitable defenseman that could win it.
I voted Hughes. but its close!

Makar > Hughes is official
I dont think anyone would have complained if Hughes had won this, but both are very deserving. Congrats to Makar.

I didn't have a post in this thread.
But I was definitely PRO-Makar... I just think he did more defensively this year than Hughes.
Offensively, they are both awesome players.
