There needs to be a " drop dead" day ( no pun intended at all ) for when they cancel remaining portion of season / playoffs. So say its May 1st, if teams cant get back on ice by May 1 then be done with it. Figure out what happens from there, but instead of impacting this season and next, I'd rather them just get sucker punched this year and start next year fresh ( so long as Coronavirus allows for it ) the first thing is of course all of our health, but need to implement some dates here to kinda give deadlines. I think so anyway.
They probably have such dates already, but there are so many contingency plans and things are changing so often, it doesn't make sense for them to announce anything.

Any ideas how the NHL might with the following things if the NHL season is cancelled:
1) Rental trades - Teams going for the cup this year will argue that they traded away draft capital to make a run at the cup and never got that chance... will their be any sort of compensatory picks in he NHL for this?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pray that no one will get infected by coronavirus
I don't think they could argue anything. They still have the inside track to sign anyone they traded for (since the player can't talk with other teams yet). Plus, one could argue that maybe the rental player could have gotten injured and might not have played for the new team anyways.
Anything you do would just upset other teams. Imagine giving teams like Tampa, Boston, etc. an extra second-round pick at the end of the second round. It would knock everyone else down in the draft order, and create other angry teams.

Rental trades are gambles and usually teams don't get much return out of them in normal years. This year everyone lost. No compensation required.
This reminds me when a GM in one of my past leagues was asking for a compensatory pick when one of his prospects (Alexei Cherepanov) passed away. It was a ridiculous request. Most prospects fail for tons of reasons. From a fantasy perspective Cherepanov is simply a prospect that didn't make it.

The only issue will be with conditions on trades. Something like if a team fails to make the playoffs, or a team gets to the second round, draft picks change hands. With no playoffs, technically everyone missed and no one made it to second round.

Schools in Ontario likely to be shut down until May 4th at the earliest. At what point does the NHL shut down the regular season - i.e make it publicly known? This decision should have been done by now.

The NHL has extended the self-isolation period to April 15.
This is the third time that the self-quarantine period has been extended for players. It was originally set for March 27 before being moved to April 6 and now we are at April 15. This has been a very fluid situation and there are still more questions than answers, but the NHL still wants to finish the regular season and award the Stanley Cup.

All of these pro leagues clinging on to pipe dreams.... just cancel everything already. Stop giving athletes and fans false hope.
