Time to go green
Wow... what is going on?

Also, is there some irony here?
They are protesting on railway tracks against the pipeline... but the railway is the best alternative to the pipeline??

Guess it depends on who you talk to as to why this is happening. I can't pretend to understand all of the nuances on this particular issue so I'm leaving it to the people who are getting paid the big bucks to figure it out to do so. All I know is it's just one of several things people seem to be screaming at each other over right now. What's new.

No kidding. Getting rid of that 1.66% while Africa ramps up their industrial revolution is going to save the world.
Yup, everything in context.
Sadly I don't think most of the protesters know the issues very well if at all. Hard to to know how many other axes are being grinded. The US oil lobby loving the conflict and perhaps influencing from background. Hereditary chiefs vs elected chiefs. They are all over the place. In my opinion, time to end Indian act. No more special privileges for any group. All equal. Don't care who was where first, there has to be statute of limitations on this.
As for global warming, it is real and it is not going to be reversed but I am sure we will adapt. I am not doom and gloom.

I live in Alberta, so shouldn't VIA rail find that money through efficiencies instead of laying people off. WWJD (What would Jason do?)
I can only see it being a VIA strategy. 1,000 jobs isn't a whole lot when it comes to temporary laying people off. SUCKS for the 1,000 families, and the ripple effect this has, but for a company like VIA, 1,000 jobs really can't be the saving point on this.
It's funny that because of the 1,000 people not going to work now, it'll save a smidge on "going green". Still think this is BS tho, the protests are effecting peoples lives that aren't involved now. Shutting down the Thousand Island Border Crossing this week, effecting peoples vacations going from Toronto to Montreal and what not. I don't know the whole story, but I've read the timeline on this. I can't agree, but I don't know the history really.

It's nearly a third of VIA's employees, so quite significant.
It's really an issue that has so much history to it, and is so complicated. Anyone who claims to have simplistic answers to stuff like this is someone I don't pay much attention to.
Hopefully it can remain peaceful enough on both sides.

From what I read, these were planned layoffs - announced in September/October of last year. They are being used now as a political tool to try and garner public support for the government to squash whatever remaining rights they recognize for the Wet'sewet'en.

Easy to say when it's not your culture, land, history, and family. I dont have any good answers but I suspect "Sorry, time is up!" isnt a good response though.
I was born in Canada, so its my land too. I can't change what happened (colonization and all the ugly that comes with it) and I don't think it's fair that I be held accountable for it either. All peoples have had to change and adapt to all kinds of external forces over the centuries, evolution if you believe it. It happens every day on an imperceptible scale. This situation should be no different but the adaptation has met resistance. Preservation of culture is an idealistic concept but not practical. Sorry but that's just how it is. We can keep all that stuff in museums and the annals of history but as a people we need to look forward and deal with the problems we are all facing (climate change and poverty), not just certain groups.
Sorry, back to those pesky pipeline issues...
