Default When to give in and sell? REP given

10th year of a keeper league and I have pretty much been competitive the entire time....sometimes even dominant. However, I think the time may have come to tear down a bit.

    12 team, Keep 10, H2H
    G, A, PPP, SOG, Hits
    W, GAA, SV%, SO

C: Crosby, Kuz, Giroux, Trocheck, Hayes
LW: Ovie, Ehlers, Hoffman, Zadina, McCann
    RW: Labanc, Gusev, AA
D: Letang, Krug, Hronek, Nurse, Sandin
    G: Jones, Mrazek, Dell, Jarry

The Crosby injury definitely hurt, and I'm currently in 9th and 14 points back of 6th.

When do I start selling some pieces? This likely won't mean Crosby or Ovie but I have already dangled Giroux out there.

Looking at your team, I don't see too many "sell the farm" pieces other than Giroux. Normally when teams kick start their rebuild, they sell off their older stars. But your older stars are Crosby and Ovi and in my experience, they will be way more productive for a few more years than anything you receive from trading them. Basically they are elite players but typically don't garner that value in trades due to their age.

I would try and improve your goaltending position. Having the SJ tandem must have also hurt this year (coming from a Sharks fan here).

Your team is a bit of a tweener, with some older producing vets, and younger budding stars, sprinkled with a couple players in their primes.

I'd look to move Letang, Hoffman, & Giroux for maybe some long term IR players or players just on their cusp.

    Letang for Hamilton?
    Giroux for Tarasenko?
    Hoffman for Guentzal?

I would look to move some pieces to acquire better goaltending, also.

I'd let the league know you're looking to sell and maximize your return.

Id start selling now if your comfortable with the need to do a bit of a rebuild and look to next year. You may have some assets that teams looking to win might be willing to pay for, I think the time is right to try and leverage that. I'd also shop both Crosby and Ovi and see what happens. I wouldn't move both, but if someone is willing to pay BIG time for one of them, then you may get a very nice return that makes you better next year. BTW, is this your whole team, or just your active roster? I think you do have some work to do to hammer this team into shape. I'd be focused on goaltending to start. I'm OK with Mrazek, Jarry is still an unknown, but I'd look to lose the SJ lock, I don't think that combo is going to help you much now or in the future. The other point of focus I would suggest is RW. Lots of question marks surrounding all of these guys and I don't think we can consider any of them elite. An upgrade on that Wing would be a good thing. Anyway, hope this helps.

Before making deals also gauge what the market is. If there's a cluster around the top, then you've got a large number of prospective buyers. But if it already looks like one team is going to win your league, you may not find owners willing to make big moves just to get to third place. Even if you want to rebuild, long term it doesn't make sense to undersell your assets out of a desire to hurry the rebuild along.

I like the idea of targeting the seriously hurt guys like Hamilton and Guentzel.

This advice here is golden as well as the trade ideas.

Great advice , check the contenders and see who they have on IR etc, or see who the top prospects they have. Letang, Giroux, and Hoffman are solid trade bait.

I genreally agree with the above advice to sell strategically, but want to add that Dell is a guy I'd want to sell off ASAP. He's sort of the starter, and not actually good.

I like a lot of the above advice. I would target moving Hoffman, Giroux, Letang and Kuznetsov.
Kuz is someone to dangle. Good name recognition and good player. Doesn't mean you move him. But could be a piece that might be a great return.

To move either Ovie or Crosby. You need it to be a great offer. Holding onto both till next season could be the better move.

Best of luck in your rebuild.

Thanks for all of the feedback. I will definitely look into some of the buy lows you have mentioned.

As for Crosby and Ovie....these would be tough because we can't trade draft picks beyond the next season. And yes I agree they're clearly still productive and can contribute if I have a quick turnaround here.

I know it's not the popular opinion, but I'd be looking to sell off Crosby & Ovechkin here (assuming of course you get some real quality coming back that's quite a bit younger). You've got some good young pieces, so if you can get your team closer to peaking all at the same time that would be good for you.

Look at Burns - this time a year ago he was worth a fortune in a trade, and now not so much. Not saying those two are only a year away from a drop, but no one lasts forever.

Obviously don't just get rid of them for the sake of it, but if you can get a decade younger and a really solid piece or two, it'd be a good time to go for it.
