Will Ovechkin pass Gretzky’s Goal Total?

Part of me wants Ovechkin to break the record, but if he does I hope he isn't a hanger-on when it happens, playing simply to break the record.

Not just Detroit the Caps could catch Philly too. There 1 point back with a game in hand. By this notion Crosby's Penguins should still be in it but there not. My point is Ovi is still helping a team that could make the playoffs and isn't a passenger yet.

I know you are making a bit of a joke...but in addition to continuing to play because of the contract, he is still contributing to the success of the team. I give Washington (and Ovechkin) a great deal of credit for being in the playoff picture at the moment.

What I mostly meant by my comment is that I hope he doesn't come back after the current contract expires to play one final season to score 10 goals or something to surpass Gretzky. I mean, I don't blame him if he does...but I hope that if he beats the record he does it in the final season of his current contract with 20+ goals and 60+ points.

Ovechkin has always been one of those players that the moment he goes cold or hits some adversity people write him off and predict the end is upon us. It's like posts during/after the 2011-12 and 2016-17 seasons all over again.

No, he's not the same player he was in his 20s. But he's still a big contributor to his team and one of the most dangerous guys in the NHL with the puck on his stick in the offensive zone.

I feel the opposite if he's that close and just laces them up without breaking the record, I would be more disappointed. Come on Gretzky's points and assist records are never going to be beaten, somebodies got to take something off of him.

Yah I was just making a light hearted joke. I totally get what you mean. I would hate for him to have to sign rental contracts for the sake of hitting the record... said as much earlier in the thread.

This Oilers fan would love to see Ovechkin break what most of us thought was an unbreakable record (in our lifetimes anyway). Even better if he does it with the Caps, but I don't see him hanging around just to break the record. If his game falls off a cliff, I think he would retire from the NHL...and then go play another couple of years in the KHL and break the Gordie Howe professional hockey all-time goals scored record...lol!

Man he's look just as dangerous as the old days recently. I feel like the beginning of the year in some ways was just the perfect storm of bad luck. I am mean some of it, not getting shot on goal and looking a little slower out the gate was his fault but he had an unsustainable look shooting percentage. If he comes back next year and even plays 85% of what he has done in the 2nd half of this year, he can hit 30 again next year and will need less then 20 his last contract year then.
