If you want to know the dominance Ovi had over the league, just look at Matthews stats this yr, and he needs to do that for like 5years to have a real shot at breaking the record lol.

AM34 is a more talented scorer than Ovie (accuracy vs volume) but he won't break the GR8's record simply because he won't have that kind of longevity and he probably won't have the strong supporting cast for as long as OV had Backstrom, Kuzie, etc.

I think Ovechkin, being this close, will play until he breaks the record, or his hip. Whatever happens first. He wont stop playing until it happens and I he's got two more years on his current deal. He plays out his contract at a minimum and potentially re-signs with Washington once that contract expires if he hasn't got past the record yet.

I just hope it doesn't end up as a sad pitty party where you've got a bottom dwelling team spoon-feeding this 40 year old dude to get him his last 10... that would kind of tarnish it for me

I wont be surprised if that isn't how this ends up. Washington is like Pittsburgh where they are at the point where their run is done and need to start over again and work their old guys out and bring in the young bloods.

That's funny. Ovi's supporting cast. Backstrom is a good not great player. Kuzy has been very inconsistent. Outside of Fedorov, who was way over his prime, Ovi has never played with anyone who will be close to the HOF. Matthews supporting cast over the last 5 years for just pumping stats, have been far better then what Ovi has had to play with.

It even goes back to the Crosby vs Ovi debate and saying that Crosby has 3 cups and Ovi has one. I argue if you switch Backstrom and Malkin around Ovi would have 3 cups and Crosby would have 1.
