Ovi needed a goal. He didn't want a goal last night, he needed a goal. He just yeeted himself into the net at one point he needed a goal at one point.

That's crazy. I am a big Ovi fan, so might have a touch of bias here but for him to just come out with a 14 SOG game after knowing everyone has been doubting him is the stuff of legends. I guess that's why he will end up as a top 10 player of all time when he hang's them up.

Counterpoint, it's slightly concerning that on 14 SG he still only scored one.

If he got 14 SOG, it looks like the team also needed him to get a goal.
A player doesn't get 14 SOG if his teammates are not looking for every single chance to get him the puck.
Ovy is not the player that is going to rush from his own end 14 times by himself and get the shot.

I feel like Ovechkin is going to stick around 2 or 3 years longer than he would have otherwise, JUST for the intention of breaking the record. No question, Ovechkin has to be in the conversation for "Greatest goal scorers of all time", but if he drags this out just to break the record and then retires, it kind of cheapens it for me...

I mean, there is a difference. Gretzky was a point a game player pretty much for his entire career. In his last season, even though he was "limping" through his goals, he still had 53 assists in 70 games. He also wasn't trying to beat anybody. He was super productive, still, by the rest of the league's standards as he winded down his career. Very different from what could happen with Ovechkin if he pathetically drags himself over the finish line over the last 2 or 3 years of his career just to beat the record.

Ovi is shooting 7% right now. His career average is 13%. Let's just say he even regresses to 11%, he would have 2 more goals by now and be on pace for 35 , give him the full 13% and he's on pace for 41. I am not too worried about him hitting the record just yet.

I'm not too worried about him getting the record either. Getting used to a new coach/systems, plus with his age he may just be shaking the cob webs off from the off season. I think once he gets going he will do good. 30 goals is what I'm guessing he will hit now.

I dont know if losing Backstrom is what is affecting his game but man, he hasn't looked like his regular self this year so far.

I see him playing into his 40’s so I don’t see the record as an issue. With the emergence of scorers like Dylan Strome and possibly a few of these younger players like Protas, Lapierre, and McMichael that might that some of the load off Ovi as he ages. He will still play until he gets it done. He is obviously still in great physical shape.
