It's crazy how much of us voted no, myself included when this question was first asked. It just seemed so un plausible in today's NHL. It's not just that he can have one or two seasons of goal scoring excellence, it's that he's been able to do it for so many years in a row.

There are certain people that talk about Matthews being a better goal scorer already but it kind of reminds me of the old Rory vs Tiger Woods debate in golf that occurred a decade ago. At the time Rory busted onto the scene winning majors at an amazing clip and people were wondering if he would end up with more majors than Tiger when it was all said and done. Fast forward to today and he hasn't won one since 2014 and still doesn't have #5. Tiger Woods has won majors in three different decades.

Him like Ovi's legacy are not only about their dominance at their peak but about their sustained excellence.

That's what I was referring to when I said Mount Rushmore. If he breaks the goal scoring record, which the whole game is based around, you can't win a hockey game without a goal. Then yes he is in the top 5 all time in my books.

Last time I checked you can't win a hockey game without a goal, I guess unless the other team just forfeits. I am not taking away from any of the other things that are involved in making a hockey player great but I am simply just stating if you ranked them in order of importance, goal scoring would be up there if not #1.
