This is virtually Tampa scenario 2.0 when they had Bishop on an expiring deal and Vas ready to take the reins. Tampa ended up dealing Bishop near the trade deadline and got some value versus letting him walk in free agency.
I wouldn’t expect the Caps to move Holtby this season but I wouldn’t be shocked if they decided to either. Both options have their merits...can hold for another push for the Cup. Or could just as easily trade to a desperate team for value they can’t turn down such as Calgary hypothetically speaking, which would essentially be as close to home as it gets for Holtby.
But as Smurf mentioned, it’s all dependent on Samsonov’s play. As for OP, I say odds are above 50% that Samsonov is the Caps starter come next season. Atm I’d say 75-25 that Holtby remains with the team this season. Though can easily become a 50-50 stay or gone scenario come trade deadline if Samsonov proves himself and the right market/suitors sets for Holtby.
