He has a new born, his wife works/owns some yoga study in TO. I'm sure he didn't want to uproot his family.
I feel this is true. I believe he was holding out hope that Marner would have signed and the money would have been there for him to re-sign in Toronto. In the end, I don't really think this was about money so much as quality of life.

In the end, I'm sure it wasn't a coincidence that he signed virtually the same contract as last time. To me, that shows he isn't a player who was looking to squeeze every dollar possible out of the team he signed with.

I suppose it depends on deployment more than anything, but I feel like this team can throw out two decent PP units.
As long as Faulk is in Car. then Gardiner isn't an issue. Both Faulk & Hamilton shoot 2-1 rates over Gardiner. They're both better PP1 options IMO. That is, unless they want a really good offensive Dman distributing vs. shooting on the point.

it does really open up a fun PP2 with Gardiner + one of in a 3-2 set up.

This is an awesome contract for the Canes.

One has to think that Chevaldayoff is calling and inquiring about a D from Carolina now.

    Ehlers for ________ ??

Maybe. They also lack depth up front, so the deal would plug one hole while creating another.

Maybe... but I would consider the hole on D after Buff and Morrissey a lot bigger hole to plug that the hole on forward.

Either way Carolina would be dealing from a position of strength if they were contemplating moving a D-man now.

Do they? They have Lowry, Perreault, Vesalainen, and Roslovic who all comfortably could move from their bottom 6 to top 6. Would that be a downgrade from Ehlers? Obviously yes. But then consider the upgrade Faulk would be on Kulikov, Pionk, Beaulieu, and Niku. That's a trade off I think you'd obviously take.

I'll take it gladly for my team. I doubt the Oilers would though. Maybe for JP and a first since they cant make those work anyway.

This could either be a great deal for the Canes or a terrible one. It all depends on the condition of Gardiner's back. If he's 100% healthy and over the back issue, it's an unbelievable deal for the Canes but if Gardiner has the same issues as last season, it's going to be a wasted $16,000,000.

Also, RNH for Faulk? I thought you were an Oilers fan.
