Much like the Girard extension, I dig this one for the team. Locking up an effective top-four quality D with offensive upside for < $4m is pretty nice. The Devils are really building something nice here.

The New Jersey Devils re-signed defenceman Will Butcher to a three-year, $11.2 million contract on Wednesday, avoiding arbitration.
Butcher, whose arbitration hearing was scheduled for August 2, will carry a $3.73 million cap hit on his new deal.
The 24-year-old scored four goals and scored 30 points in 78 games this season.
Butcher was drafted in the fifth round (123rd overall) by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2013 NHL Draft. After four years at the University of Denver, Butcher signed as a free agent with the Devils. He was named to the NHL’s All-Rookie Team in 2017-18.
He is coming off a two-year, entry-level contract.
The American defenceman has 74 points in 159 games.

Pretty meh value for cap leagues though, especially if he loses PP time to PK.
He's so heavily reliant on the PP for his scoring, and PK probably puts him on PP2, so I worry he'll struggle to get more than 30 points and his "real life" value isn't so great. Not a terrible deal but I doubt it will prove to be a bargain either.

Yes there will be more and more of the skating/puck moving defensemen, who have greater hockey than fantasy value, taking over. I think of Spurgeon or Stetcher as earlier examples - poor value for points and peripherals. These guys are taboo in fantasy leagues and I already to try spot and avoid them as prospects.
Second to third pairing money. They recognize they have a specialist here and this is the cost..
I can't get a read on this kid.. Is he going to be a 40 point guy or does he have more??

This is a solid deal for what he brings to the table. He had 74 points combined in his first two years in the NHL. There's a lot of value here. He has flaws but this contract won't make expectations get out of control.
