Why are the Sens doing the Bolts a favour and opening up caproom for them? For so little in return?

I get that the Sens are trying to reach the capfloor but cmon...

Is this an insurance money thing vs actual money thing?

Cally on LTIR seems a foregone conclusion - is it likely that Condon won't be IR eligible? Meaning buried in the minors but real money being paid out?

Not sure I can see the value for OTT in doing this without a real $ factor involved - that draft pick could literally be a single slot difference.

    Anyone with some insight?

Sens are not doing a good job using cap space to their advantage. Helps them on the salary front due to insurance (Melnyk special) but they also need to collect assets.

How do you take on this contract and get basically nothing in return? Weaponizing cap space ... against yourself.

On a more positive note, I've gotta believe that the Sens would take on Bryan Rust + Jack Johnson for free, right? I mean, this organization just does stuff.

Callahan is definitely bound for LTIR but strange that the Sens didn't get more for taking that on.

I don't think this was what Sens fans had in mind when Melnyk said they would be a cap team soon.

This trade boils down to a few factors:
Condon was owed more salary this year than his cap hit - so we knew he was a goner.
Callahan's contract is likely insured, so there's no big loss to OTT there (If someone actually finds proof of that, I would be interested).
LTIR could have helped TB, but this makes things much easier.
Like in the VGK/TOR Clarkson trade, there was value going both ways so there wasn't much of a pick incentive - echoed here.

    Other fallout:
Tbay now has Condon and Domingue as their likely two AHL goalies.
Nilsson is in line for 35-40 starts with 50 starts worth of saves.

If there's one thing we can be absolutely sure of, it's that Melnyk saved in terms of actual cash being paid out.

We already knew Melnyk pretty well but this is another example of what he values. It was more important to him to save as many dollars as possible than it was to mine Tampa Bay for valuable assets. They should have at least gotten one of TB's good AHL forward prospects.

Financial implications of the Callahan trade for the Ottawa #Senators:

    Cap hit change: +$3,400,000
    Salary expenses: -$2,060,000

This trade helps keep the Senators above the lower limit, while also decreasing the salary expenses.

Sens save money yet add cap space...they won't have to actually pay Callahan anything...that's a plus for them. One more example of Melnyk being a cheap bastard, but this isn't a horrible business decision. It would have been more acceptable if the Sens had gotten a 2nd or 3rd round pick instead of the 5th.

Tampa adds cap space more conveniently by not having to put Callahan on LTIR...I expect the Point contract extension to be announced very shortly.

TB has McEhlhinny signed for 2yrs at 1.3 - Domingue at 1.1 for one and now taking on Condon with a dead ('buried') hit of 1.3m - screams more movement. TB isn't a team that really can be wasting cap space on AHL goalies. Which is where Domingue & Condon are bound.

I wouldn't be surprised if Condon gets flipped for more than a 5th rounder.
