They dismantled their blue line in a big way. Use to have one of the most intriguing young blue lines in hockey...
MDZ is a good pick up given the right deployment. He's flourished under some systems (Philly) and looked dreadful in others (Van)
He really needs specific deployment - given that he fills his role admirably

That wasn't the case not long ago when they didn't have enough space for everyone. Then they lost Vatanen, Montour and Theodore with not much to show for it. That's why I keep objecting when people make trade rumors where a team deals from a position of strength "because they have depth there so they can afford to do it". Well, not really. Usually that kind of deal ends up plugging one hole while creating another. That's kind of how I feel about the Vatanen trade years later.
