Best Defensemen in FA must be asking for too much money? Any news on this guy?

Last I heard a couple days ago he was looking for 7 years x $7 million AAV, which ... honestly isn't even bad considering the state of the FA market. He's unequivocally the best Dman available, and is really unfairly maligned for some more "high profile" mistakes in a Leafs uniform. But the numbers don't lie, this dude is a fantastic player and still has some high-value years of production left. Sure, seven years is a bit long term, but he is going to provide really good value for $7m over at least 3-4+ years of that contract. That is a worthwhile investment for a team in need of a slick puckmover with actually very good defensive impacts.

I was really hoping the Penguins were going to leverage some of their newfound prospects (PO Joseph, Legare, Poulin, Addison, Hallander, etc.) and perhaps some picks to shed the Jack Johnson and Gudbranson contracts, and make a serious push for Gardiner. In my eyes, a truly legit top4 LHD is exactly what the Pens needed and I'm disappointed right now to say the least.

The chatter I heard was that some suitors might be scared off a little due to a lingering back issue. Apparently, Gardiner avoided surgery, but teams might be concerned about committing big bucks only to see him undergo back surgery.

I think it’s the health issue. He wants too much money and too much term for a guy who’s not healthy.

I dont even think its health issues.

If its true that he was originally asking for 7x7....well hes just not worth that. You know how the saying goes.........all it takes is one GM to offer him a ridiculous contract....well no GM offered him that.

Gardiner can thread the needle.....he can saucer a pass out of the zone and start a odd man advantage from his own goal line.....but he's too shaky/not aggressive enough/too many dumb mistakes.....

Offensive Dmen only get so much......He reminds me of Mike Green way too much

He's way better defensively than Mike Green, and it's true he's made some mistakes in high profile moments but that doesn't erase all the positive ways he impacts the game. If Tyler Myers is worth $6 million x 5 years, there's simply no good reason that Gardiner doesn't have a similar contract when he's a better offensive player, and isn't a huge drain defensively. He's actually had positive defensive impacts to CorsiFor and xG over the past three seasons at 5v5.

This is Gardiner and Myers at 5v5 over the last three seasons.

Throw every stat out the window and just go with your eye test.

Is Gardiner somebody you would want in your top 4 on your stanley cup contending roster.........to me that answer is a hard no.

Absolutely yes. He's better than Tyson Barrie.

Pretty much every available metric and objective measurement indicates that Gardiner > Barrie. This shouldn't be a controversial statement. Barrie is terrible defensively, and has consistently mediocre shot metrics. Granted, he's a very skilled shooting talent, and contributes in the game in certain ways that are difficult to measure. He definitely is one of those guys who consistently outperforms his expected goals metrics, and that's a very repeatable skill for elite talents. But a well-rounded defensively strong defenseman Tyson Barrie is not ... Jake Gardiner, on the other hand has generally positive defensive impacts over an incredibly large sample size. That's just an objective fact. And the elite offensive contributions have always been there, too.
