Carolina dumps some salary and acquires a capable backup goalie.
Chicago gets a left-handed shooting dman and a forward capable of scoring 20 goals someday in the NHL (Saarela scored 25 and 30 in the AHL last two seasons).
With four lefties in Chicago now, I wonder what will happen. I don't know if any of them can play the right side (Keith, Maatta, Gustafsson, and De Haan). The right side is looking very weak, with Seabrook and Murphy as the only options.
All in all, a weird trade considering Carolina has an abundance of righties and Chicago an abundance of lefties.

Couple things- de Haan is out till November and Gus has played on the right side so the Hawks don't have to make a trade immediately. Ideally, I see the lines shaking out as something like:
Keith/Murphy
de Haan /Gus
Maata/Jokiharju
Seabrook
But if Boqvist comes in and plays lights out in the preseason that will definitely give the Hawks something to consider. Personally, I think the Hawks should trade Gustaffson since this is his last year in Chicago IMO.

Sounds like it was a cap dump for Carolina, and Chicago wanted NHL LHD who can play on the PK. They got that with De Haan and Maata.

I'm wondering if the Hawks don't believe they have any shot at extending Erik Gustafsson.
He's going into the last year of his contract with CHI. Gustavsson will be UFA in 2021.
Based on his play from last 1.5years, he's now a.... (what would people call him)... a $7m+ defenseman?!?
So, if CHI doesn't feel they can re-sign him... then they add their future 3rd LH D-man now... knowing they'll be trading Gustafsson for picks/prospects this coming season... maybe even soon.
