Dubas is cleaning Lou’s mess. No salary was retained opening $6.5M in cap. That was the cost to clear space for a bit of extra wiggle room to hopefully get Marner and maybe Kapanen done too if he can also get rid of Zaitsev.

Good news for Leaf fans, suggest they might feel closer to retaining Marner.

Not too much of a cost (likely a late first round pick) to get rid of a bad contract and clear some cap space.

Apparently Carolina will try to convince Marleau to play out his contract with them but if he won't, they will buy him out and he will return to San Jose.

Wouldn't it be the most Toronto Maple Leafs thing ever if Marleau stayed in Carolina and then scored a series clinching goal to eliminate the Leafs from the 2020 playoffs?
