TSN referenced a Hockey News article speculating that we could see the offer sheet drought end this season with guys like Marner, William Karlsson, Point and Kapanen as candidates.
I just don't see it happening but they do make the point that Carolina has the cap space to sign Marner to an $11m dollar deal. In my opinion, this is totally worth it for them. They are a young already competitive team coming off a Conference Final appearance. Their next four first rounders are likely to be late (especially if they add a talent like Marner). He would fit right in with the young talent already on the roster. Plus it takes a star player from a conference rival. Hell, if Carolina did this, I would rank them higher on the contenders list in the East than the Leafs (assuming they get a goalie).
Without me, it's only "aweso".
In some respects 4 first rounders for a talent like Marner seems like a lot to give up, but really it isn't. If we look back at most teams last 4 first round picks, most of the picks are not impact players. Maybe with those 4 first round picks the Leafs would end up with one player comparable to Marner in the long run, but that's probably a best-case scenario. I don't have time to go back and look at each team's last 4 first round picks, but off the top of my head, Marner straight up for any 4 picks that didn't include Matthews, McDavid, or Eichel would probably be worth it.
I mean, here are a few...
New Jersey: Ty Smith, Nico Hischer, Michael McLeod, Pavel Zacha.
Carolina: Andrei Svechnikov, Martin Necas, Jake Bean, Noah Hanifin
Arizona: Barrett Hayton, Pierre-Oliver Joseph, Clayton Keller, Dylan Strome
I'm sure New Jersey, Carolina, and Arizona would give up those players for Marner, and I'm sure most teams would. It would be interesting to figure out which teams have the cap space to make Marner an offer over $11 a year. If those teams are not likely to be lottery-pick teams, the Leafs might not break even in the end. Though I suppose they could deal those extra first round picks to pick up a roster player to help replace Marner in the short-term.
We probably won't ever see an offer sheet, but it would be fascinating as a fan to see the fallout if one does occur.

Carolina and Colorado both make complete sense to offer sheet. They won’t, but they should.
FWIW, with no credentials, no true identity, no references, nobody really has any reason to believe a single word of this. As it is, even if Marner does sign an offer sheet and does leave Toronto, that doesn’t mean that any or all of this is true. No point continuing to throw out baseless rumours that you can’t substantiate beyond “I know a guy”.
