Seriously, though...that is an impressive list. Odds are we won't ever see so many high-end RFAs coming off their ELCs at the same time ever again (especially when you consider we also had Meier, Aho, and Werenski). Such a great crop of young players.

And to add, Marner isn't really any different than Point, Rantanen, Laine, Connor, Tkachuk, etc., yet he is the one most vilified by fans/media. I guess that's the issue with playing in Toronto, which perhaps not coincidentally is why he wants a 5-year deal so he can leave the Leafs as soon as possible and no longer be a part of the insanity.

We don't know what any of the players have turned down. I would not be shocked at all if term is part of the reason for some of these hold ups.

Why else would he want a 5-year deal if it isn't to control where he plays once he hits UFA status? And considering the insane media attention Toronto gets, I can't blame him for wanting the option of leaving.

The offer sheets that were presented to him were not for 5-years, which is why he turned them down. It isn't necessarily that he wants to leave Toronto...he just wants to be a UFA in 5 years, regardless of team.

Yes. However to sign a 3yr deal he would want it back loaded so he can do that for the 4th yr at 13M+, but Dubas wouldn't want to give him the easy out there, so I would assume he's offering something like a 10M/9.5M/9M setup on a 3yr deal.

I don't necessarily think he wants out of Toronto...I just think he wants to control where he goes (if anywhere) as soon as possible, like Matthews and Aho got with their contracts.

I feel many of these RFAs want to be UFAs as soon as possible so they have full leverage in their next contract. As a player, if you can get a 5-year deal now to bring you UFA status as a 26 year old, then you might be able to get two more contracts before you retire (7 years each, bringing you to 40 years old).

On the other hand, if you sign an 8 year deal right now, you can only get one more contract at max value before retiring.

But if he wanted UFA, he'd go the 3yr deal to QO route.

I think he just wants money, and the quickest, richest route to that is 5yr deal with TOR. Quickest route is a trade, meh-quick is 3yr-QO route, Richest route is 5yr-UFA route
