Kotkaniemi will be an RFA in 2 years, the Habs better be careful because I can see offer sheets going to him. Lets say an offer sheet for 5 years bringing him to UFA. I can see Carolina just waiting

UFA status requires a player to be 27 or have 7 years of NHL service. 3 years would only take him to 25 and 6 years of service so he'd be missing out on either option.

Problem is. after year 3 the team needs to give him a qualifying offer. That 13M can become 14-15M. I would gather the 14-15M is the starting point of an extension.

As a Habs fan, I am not worried at all. First, Kotkaniemi would have to make it to RFA instead of signing before it gets to that point. Then Carolina needs to ensure that Kotkaniemi is a player they want to sign to a five-year deal. Then Kotkaniemi needs to agree to the deal. Lots of factors.

Plus how many times is there a revenge offer sheet? Offer sheets happen so infrequently that it would be tough to imagine a revenge offer sheet.

The last "revenge" offer sheet that I remember was in 2008.

First the Canucks signed David Backes. Once the Blues matched they went out and signed Steve Bernier a week later which the Canucks matched as well.

yeah good luck finding a player as good as marner with those 4 first rounders if said team is picking in the 25-31/32 overall range for the next 4-5 years .

I didn't say they would find a player like Marner using those picks. Losing Marner would be less than ideal, but so is paying a single player, a winger at that, $13M+ per season. The cap space and draft picks would allow Dubas to be creative in the trade market.

I think he just wants Austins contract and is using the offersheet threat to get there . If he accepts a 13 m per sheet and dubas matches while squeezing his nose and likely trading Willy to accomodate the need for more cap space then Marners going to feel all kinds of awkward stepping on that sheet of ice in oct .

He’s worth what the market will bear in a cap league. And at $13mil per he’ll feel just fine stepping on the ice no matter where it is.
