After seeing Hayes and his 54pts at 26 get 7.14. Mitch with 94pts at 22 is going to want 14.5m now.

I'm interested in seeing what happens with Marner--but I'm thinking he's not going to offer any type of discount--and will want at least 11 or 11.5 a pop from the Leafs, without going a full 8 years.
I think the Leafs are in a tough spot and should have locked up their kids before offering the world to Tavares.
That said, Tavares is a great player, and I don't blame the Leafs for going after him--but their own kids should have been more of a priority IMO.

Thanks OG2014. I was having a hard time making sense of RA’s comment. Just RA being RA I guess.
Agreed btw. He’s done everything he said he’s do. This Marner contract could be the difference maker. I love Mitch, but not at the expense of the teams future. Matthews/JT are the central nervous system that will allow Marner and the other top 6 wingers to do what they do IMO. Both locked up for the next 5&6 years. We’ll see if Marner wants to be a part of it.
I haven't looked closely at the numbers...but what amount can Toronto safely afford to pay Marner?
I agree that the best thing for any team to do is build some strength/depth down the middle, so having Matthews and Tavares signed long-term is the best thing for Toronto. I mean, it probably helps them more to have signed Tavares instead of matching Marner's supposed (rumored) contract demands.
That said, if Toronto can somehow find a way to keep Marner/Tavares together, and Nylander/Matthews together, they could potentially have the best top two lines in the NHL for years to come.
I just don't see Marner taking anything less than 10 million AAV. Can Toronto even afford that? I really don't know, but am curious. If they can, I think there is room for a contract to be signed between Marner and the Leafs. If the Leafs can only afford to pay Marner $8-$9 million AAV, then imo he is as good as gone.

ok, to answer my own question from above, I just looked closely (but quickly) at the numbers on capfriendly...someone correct me if I am wrong with any of the following...
- if Toronto trades Marleau, Kadri, and Zaitsev, and does not re-sign Gardiner, they will have $21 million in cap space
- at that point, they'd need to sign 12 more players (Marner, Kapanen, and Johnsson included).
Assuming Marner gets $10 million AAV, then they'd have around 12 million to sign 11 players (9 F and 2 D).
I guess that is possible, but seems very difficult and hard to imagine they can get that done.
