They had to do this just to try keeping up with the Braves!
In all honesty I strongly dislike this signing for the young and exciting Braves, because it likely means Wild Card is the best option for a playoff spot.
Wow. What an offseason for the Phillies. McCutchen, Segura, Robertson, Realmuto and now Harper!
I still think Harper is overrated and this deal will definitely be an eyesore in about 5 years, but this has to make them the NL favorite for at least the next 2-3 years.

Well anything can happen. Look at all those great Nats teams ....and it's not like these Phillies have a Scherzer.
But the NL should be absolutely fascinating!
NL East - Braves, Phils, Mets and Nats should all be competitive.
NL West - Dodgers, Rockies and MAYBE the Padres turn things around
NL Central - as usual - Brewers, Cubs and Cards.
WOW
Another gross contract but it's what it is in todays sports. The Phillies will have an exciting team to watch the next few years for sure.

Harper is a great talent. But 13yrs...no opt outs...wow. Harper is great but does he have the mental drive to keep going? Like, if he decides to just mail it in, omg this is bad.
If you enjoy WAR, the Phillies go from like a 77-85 team to like a 83-79 team. Great 25mill/yr spent right?

Yeah... it'll be interesting to see how Harper plays of these next 13 years.
One would think teams learned their lesson from the Angels & Pujols... but it's also about selling seats... and Phillies gonna do some of that!
Could the city of Philadelphia become the next Boston? (sports championship super city?)
Someone did the potential profit off of Machado's contract and it was something like a 300mill contract can make a team 500mill if the team barely improves.
1 playoff series makes a ton of money too.

I'd love to see Brian Burke sound off again on long contracts. he hated them as a GM.

I don't know what the contract is overall or per season (don't think it was even mentioned here) but if it's the biggest in sports history, I guess it's safe to put just short of my life savings on the Phillies to win it all this year. Only way you can justify it. Easy money.
13yr, 330mill is the contract (25.38/yr)
