I’d think Murray fires Carlyle to save his own ass for a little longer. You know, usually a GM gets one coaching change to right the ship...
After putting up 13 (!!) SOG against St Louis at home, surely someone will see the door.

Firing the coach is the path of least resistance so they'll probably go that route.

Didn't Murray sign a contract extension in the middle of this big slump?

Maybe neither. Murray has that new two-year extension so he's pretty safe and has been adamant that he doesn't want to fire Carlyle mid-season.
If you look at Murray's 10 years on the job, he has made two coaching changes: an early-season one where he fired Carlyle who he inherited from Bryan Burke and replaced him with Bruce Boudreau, and then he fired Boudreau after four straight playoff losses only to hire Carlyle again.
I wonder about money playing a factor in this. Anaheim has always been a budget team. When they fired Carlyle to hire Boudreau I am assuming they got a discount on Boudreau after he himself had been fired by Washington.
Carlyle's contract with Anaheim is listed as unknown on Capfriendly, but I believe it expires this summer. They may just chalk this season as lost to injuries and regroup under a new coach in the summer. However, Murray is almost certainly not going anywhere.

I dunno if it's a coaching option, or a team option though.Randy Carlyle, who coached the Anaheim Ducks to the Western Conference Final this season, on Friday signed a one-year contract extension through the 2018-19 NHL season, with an option for 2019-20.

I agree with Steve. ANA just got Rakell back and soon Perry. There is still a good nucleus there; Murray hasnt done shitty, franchise-destroying trades like Chiarelli did.
It seems to me that they don't have the offense power to really compete.

Certainly no one is saying that Murray is as bad as Chiarelli has been. Chialleri will go down as one of the worst GMs in history. And getting Perry back does not help much. He’s too slow. Both Carlyle and Perry are old news. The game has changed and they can’t keep up. They ought to give Dallas Eakins another shot.
