The Toronto Maple Leafs entered today with 24 players on their roster. Amid reports, unconfirmed by the AHL transactions list, that they’d “papered down” the waiver exempt Travis Dermott to get to 23 so William Nylander would fit on the roster, we now have news that it isn’t a waiving that’s going to sort this crowded roster out.

    Josh Leivo traded to Vancouver.
    — Chris Johnston (@reporterchris) December 3, 2018

Josh Leivo has played 27 games with the Leafs this season, which is all of them to date. He has four goals and two assists, and has shown some admirable qualities in a depth role. After failing to crack the Leafs roster for several years running, and spending most of last year in the press box, he’s proved himself capable as a fourth-liner who can fill in on the power play.

In two prior seasons with the Leafs, he’s had one segment of very high personal shooting percentage and one of very high on-ice shooting percentage. As always with low minute, or occasional players, rating out their points stats can be a bit misleading as they carry more opportunities for variance to be having a big effect.

If you think that’s the case with Leivo, you might think he is just a depth player. If you think his real ability is conveyed in those numbers, you might think an opportunity to play higher in the lineup was in order. The Leafs don’t have the room for him, but perhaps Vancouver can discover who he really is as a player.

Leivo will finish this season as an RFA with arbitration rights. With his inflated for a depth player salary of $925,000 right now, he’s due a qualifying offer of $971,250. That’s not the sort of cap hit the Leafs want to see in their depth players next season.

Yesterday, the Canucks waived Brendan Leipsic, the player the Leafs chose to expose in the expansion draft over Leivo. It seems they agreed with the Lou Lamoriello’s decision. The Los Angeles Kings claimed Leipsic today.

That's a pretty funny quote there from Axe. What do the Leafs want to be playing their depth players? 650K each instead of 950K? It's laughable that they think Leivo's salary had anything to do with why he was traded. Anything you have a depth player for under $1 million, you're probably doing pretty well for the cost/benefit against the cap.

I thought that was an odd quote as well. Perhaps they meant an additional $971,250 on top of $950K? I'm not sure about qualifying offers myself.

Claiming 950k is inflated for a depth player makes it seem like Eugene Melnyk wrote the quote

Maybe it was meant to be like, "Leivo and Ennis were the ones to be waived, but the tipping point was the $300k"?

Probably this because as a low income team that $300k is very important to the Leafs bottom line.

Note: This is the best explanation for the absolutely asinine analysis by Pension Puppets.

There's no rationalizing that comment, it wasn't very intelligent

Well, didn't the Leaf come up $300k in their offer to get the deal done with Nylander?

    Nylander (6.6mill) + Leivo (900k) = 7.5mill, Waive/trade Ennis
    Nylander (6.9mill) + Ennis (600k) = 7.5mill, Waive/trade Leivo

Yeah it's just 300k, but maybe they rationalized coming up in price by keeping Ennis over Leivo

Both have contracts expiring this summer though, so I feel like that's just a coincidence. The money this year doesn't matter as much. It's next year that it starts to matter, and neither Ennis or Leivo had any cost certainty past this year.

The only rationalization I can see for the comment is Leivo is 925k now and his QO is a bit more and yet he's still not an established full time NHL player. This is his first year playing all games to date and it hasn't been his best year by any means.

Ya I'm just grasping at straws besides the Leafs just didn't like him the best. It was Lou who gave him the contract extension, not Dubas.

Dubas decided to keep the faster, smaller Ennis over Leivo...But also decided to keep Marincin and Gauthier...

Yeah, Leafs just traded the player that got the return I guess.

Leivo should get a chance to increase his minutes in Van. with the way Van seems to get injured, he could slot in mid-6 most of the year.

Leafs had 9 picks in 2011, including 2 first rounders (Biggs and Percy), now with Leivo being traded, only Sparks is left on the team.

    Tweet from Bob McKenzie:

TOR promised Leivo when signed that if he were to fall out of lineup with limited opportunity to get back in, they would move him to a more favourable situation.

Makes sense. And a much better explaination than the fellas over at PPP.
