I highly doubt he reaches those projections. He's too one-dimensional to get big minutes. He can still bring value to a team and put up decent totals but third-pairing minutes will limit his upside.
Hi everyone,
I need your help regarding DeAngelo.
Dobber have a upside and 3YP of 63 and 45. I trust Dobber, but I don't see anything that give me any indication that he might reach those projections.
If you think he might reach those projections, please tell me why. If you think it's too high, also tell me why.
I'm in a keeper league, 11 team, point only with 3 D counting. I want to know if I should use I pick on him. If so how long should I keep him before he become valuable.
Thanks

a really good skill set, but as ED said, unlikely to reach it. I shift boom/bust focus from DeAngelo to Merkley (who seems to be trending up)

For some reason Dobber's defense projections are always higher than what is realistic.

If Karlsson resigns he may spend a lot of time on the third pairing learning from Karlsson and Burns.
Merkley is a guy who had the skills to go high in the draft but slipped due to "Attitude"
in all preseason games, I have seen a display of those skills and think he is better than DeAngelo was at that age by quite a bit.

I don't believe the boom/bust label is a thing anymore. On D we're seeing more and more examples of skilled (but flawed) defensemen play sheltered third-pairing minutes with time on the power play. Up front teams are going four lines deep with skill. Despite their flaws they bring value to a team.
Guys like DeAngelo and Derrick Pouliot are good examples. They're not "boom" because they're not stars but they're definitely not "bust" because they're in the NHL playing secondary roles. Merkley will probably be playing on the third pair for a couple years which will probably serve him well long-term.

I just can't find anything new-sy on DeAngelo, is this guy even going to make the team?
FYI, I'm hoping he does at least make the team lol

So, let’s update this discussion. He has pedigree. He’s just 23. He has a decent amount of pro hockey under his belt. He has 25 pts in 49 games in limited usage (and also exposure lol, so there’s that). Starting to turn a corner here into a good player? Maybe he’s figuring it out.
It certainly looks like he's figured things out. Reaching 45 points next year with lots of PIM is looking a real possibility right now.
I can't promise I'll try but I'll try to try.
He also was just healthy scratched on Monday so there's still some hiccups along the way but he's in a good spot.
I'm certainly more optimistic on him today than I was, say, one year ago. He's finding his way. Good on him.
