At times last year Nashville ran out Josi/Irwin, Subban/Emelin, Ekholm/Ellis. Usually it was when they didn't have last change, and were playing a team like Pittsburgh or Winnipeg who is tough to match up against. I think you might see it on occasion, but the majority of the time (all the home games and half of the away games) will be played with Burns/Karlsson/Vlasic as three of the D on the top two pairs.

I'm not even that worried about Karlsson's PP time, let alone this. He's gonna get his 2nd pairing minimum time at 5on5. PP, he can QB it and have Burns as the "4th forward" role.

I like the idea of spreading it out over a few lines like this. Gives them more threats at varying times of the game 5 on 5. I wouldn't look at it like "he's on the 3rd pairing" when you have that many good Dmen. I am sure they will all see similar amounts of icetime.

If SJ is serious about signing Karlsson to a long term deal (which I think they are), there's no way he gets treated like a traditional 3rd line pairing defenseman. He'll get his minutes and PP opportunities, otherwise, he's going to be unhappy and won't want to sign there.

They're trying different combinations. He obviously wouldn't be a traditional 3rd pairing guy with limited ice time. It's just a similar philosophy to spreading the offense up front across 3-4 lines. If anything it might free him (or Burns) to play against lesser competition. But then again it's preseason so nothing should be taken too seriously.

Erik Karlsson on any pairing immediately makes it a first pairing. I don't see them acquiring Karlsson to play him 14 minutes a night haha

If you had Burns, Vlasic, and Karlsson on different pairings and you theoretically had a full game with zero PPs, I'd imagine you could peg the minutes almost 20-20-20 exactly between the three pairings. What a weird thing to worry about on *checks notes* September 19th.
Also, as pointed out, whatever pairing Karlsson on is the first pairing. Just like whatever line Crosby is on is the first line.
