He did not announce his retirement. He announced that he will never be healthy enough to play in the NHL again. That is a big difference. He will continue to be paid and will continue to count against the salary cap for the Detroit Red Wings. He will be eligible for LTIR though.

Probably not with his small salaries, and LTIR eligibility. Franzen never went to Arizona, but that's likely due to LTIR eligibility.

That’s exactly what makes these players appealing to cap floor teams though, higher cap hit at a low $$$ amount per year. Franzen would be a good candidate too now that his actual salary is only $1 mill.

Interesting. I am not sure he gets into the HOF. He only had a couple of years of elite point production and only the Conn Smythe in 08... 960 points in 1082
