    Default Strange award voting.

This just blows my mind. Yanni Gourde somehow got a first-place vote for the Calder. Sergachev got two second-place votes. I wonder if a writer for Tampa went 1-2 in voting?

Apparently, one writer didn't vote for Gallant at all for the Jack Adams.

In the Vezina voting, Vasilevskiy finished 3rd in overall votes without a single 1st place vote yet Freddy Andersen and MAF both got one 1st place vote. Strange indeed. How does Vasilevskiy not get at least ONE first place vote?

Stuff like this is what happens when they mandate that votes have to be revealed. Writers or whoever is doing the voting feel pressured to give a nod to the team they're covering on the beat or whatever instead of who really deserves it. Should have left it the way it was and let the votes be anonymous unless the voter chose to reveal it him/herself.

"The Professional Hockey Writers Association has voted by an overwhelming margin to reveal each voter?s individual ballot following the 2018 National Hockey League Awards ceremony.

After an internal debate that stretched over many months, PHWA Members voted 81.3 per cent in favour of full transparency, in a run-off conducted over a two-week period this March. This decision will result in the publication of each of the approximately 170 ballots, within days of the NHL Awards ceremony in Las Vegas in late June."

This should be fun when the ballots are revealed!

With 170 voters you've gotta expect there will be at least 2-3 Big Evs in there.

Wow... that is crazy that Gallant wasn't on the vote for one writer at all... that writer must not write for hockey. haha

Yes, I agree, this is crazy, especially when Gourde got a first place vote... you would think the TBAY writer that voted 1st for Gourde would have voted for Vas for sure.

Also I was surprised to see Couturier finish ahead of Bergeron in Selke voting.

He must have had a brain injury. No one with the credentials to vote could leave Gallant off the ballot. Embarrassing really.

They vote for someone odd to raise their name up in the media. Works especially well when you know the award winner is a slam dunk, so you vote someone else and your name stands out.

    It's about exposure.

It's about incompetence. So much of that these days. Such a different world with no accountability. But yeah, this guy will probably get a pay increase to enforce his incompetency.

They need something to do on July 1. Saying that - they should do a voter reveal at the trade deadline in Feb '19. They really need some sort of real filler for the dead air they've got.
