Default Trade up to #5OA Draft Pick?

Back again with another trade question. Currently I have the #8OA and #9OA draft picks for the 2018 entry draft and am trying to build up a seriously bad team that I just took over.

As you can see by my roster below I am in desperate need of some high end talent. I'm just wondering if people think it's worth trading up from #8OA to #5OA. I've already tried dealing for #1-4 and other GMs aren't interested in moving those picks. I have a pending deal a fellow GM is mulling over that is...

    In:
    2018 Draft #5OA Pick

    Out:
    2018 Draft #8OA Pick
2019 Draft 1st Round Pick (From the team who just won the league, so likely a bottom 3 pick in our 16 team league)

What I'm wondering is do people think getting Hughes/Boqvist/Wahlstrom instead of likely Dobson/Smith is worth moving that future draft pick? It's worth noting that all defensemen points in this league are worth 1.5x forward points, so elite offensive defensemen are incredibly valuable.

    Thanks!

Nope. Wouldn't consider it. You need all the pieces you can get. Keep next year's pick and turn it into some young talent.

Looking at the last four years, would you rather:
    5th overalls
    Petersson
    Juolevi
    Hanifin
    Dal Colle

    or
    8th overalls
    Middlestadt
    A. Nylander
    Werenski
    W. Nylander
    +
16th overalls in the next year
    16th this year
    Valimaki
    Chychrun
    Barzal

When you put some names on it, you can see why I have the opinion I do.

Agree with above. If you could get into the top 3, it'd be a different story methinks.

Plus, things change a lot between now and the draft. This isn't a deal to make now. This time last year, ISS had Vilardi ranked #3, Makar 9th and Pettersson 20th.

No chance I do that. 2 shots > 1 shot, and nobody knows enough to make up for that difference.

This is a trade you should only consider making on the draft floor IF a top-3 talent slips for whatever reason. I wouldn't make this trade now - if the picks flop Dahlin, Svechnikov, Zadina, Tkachuk ... you might want to make a play to snag Wahlstrom at 5. But, if a Hughes, Boqvist or both sneak into the mix, you're a lock to get a stud at 8. Also, you want to see which NHL teams take these players. I would definitely sit tight for now.

Is this a points-only league? That makes a big difference here. In points-only with bonus points for defensemen, I can see the draft going something like Dahlin, Svechnikov, Zadina, Wahlstrom, Hughes, Boqvist, Bouchard... So Ty Smith is probably your best option at that point. But if it's a league that rewards hits and PIM, then Tkachuk probably sneaks in there.

Either way, the difference between Hughes and Smith probably isn't worth a top 16 pick. If you had some very strict keeper rules where you can only keep a couple of prospects, it would be a different story.

I would not trade a 1st in '19 to move up to 50th overall this season... nope, no way, no how. you def. shouldn't be adding the 80th pick to it ta-boot.
Cancel this one fast.... much better off trading your 50th and 80th to move up to 40th this year.... if you've done your research and can identify a solid 2nd rounder that's available

I read that wrong at first glance as well, it became clear when he said he "already tried dealing for #1-4 ." It's fifth overall (5OA) not 50OA.

For a team rebuilding extensively as you'll need to I'd keep the extra piece. With some luck you'll find gems at 8th and 16th picks.

I'm focused on game 7 tonight... spaces required - hyphen something --

That said. I love the idea of nabbing a Boqvist and Wahlstrom with those two picks. - you're going to get a stud D (which you so desperately need) AND a top 6 forward - I'd also keep the picks

Keep your picks Your team needs all the help it can get and having two top 10's in a deep draft will help. As Eskimo Brother has shown, look at some of the potential talent that will be available. I dont think its worth it to lose a pick this year in a deep draft only to move up 3 spots and give away a first next year. Even thought next years first is going to be picks 12-16 say, thats still mid 1st round on the NHL draft board which is solid.

Also just an FYI - Defensive players scoring are 2.5x not 1.5.

So in short, sit tight on the picks you have. Unless you can get into the top 3 with them (which like you said, those GM's dont want to move them.)

    Thanks for the input everyone!

It does reward hits and PIM slightly, but also has a big bonus for defenseman scoring. Full rules below (or in Hockey13Playa's signature ). Forwards score 5 per point and Defenseman score 7.5. With a lot of extra bonuses:

If you had surplus of talent I pull the trigger, you need as much talent as possible. After reading JPs link to the prospect mailbag, I might see if anyone would be willing to give you a 2nd this year and a 1st next year. Sounds like next years class is shaping up to be extremely talented.
