The Bruins royally overpaid for Nash I think. Might just be me but I think spoons still has a bright future ahead of him.

If Bruins go deep in the playoffs as stated previously, then the deal will be worth it. Good deal for Ranger, get picks and assets in the cap world. Spooner may surprise in big apple, and if they move him more assets.

To be clear, I'm not disagreeing it's a slight overpayment. But I think Nash brings more complete play and veteran presence in the room and on ice. Exactly the kind of thing I'd be looking for in a rental.

Nash will have better numbers in Boston, getting traded to NYR is proven to lower your point totals. Playing with Krejci and Debrusk in the Bruins system should see him improve.

Boston basically paid a 1st + Spooner who will probably get at least a 2nd. I'd say a 1st + 2nd is fair price for a rental even if Nash is past his prime.

Boston adds Nash, Toronto adds Plekanec. I think both teams are trying to make moves to put them over the top in that likely playoff matchup.

Stats-wise, Nash shoots more (13.2 SOG/60 compared to 10.2), and has a better split between primary and secondary assists (2:1 primary to secondary compared to Spooner's 1:1). I'm not saying Nash definitely puts up the numbers Spooner was, but his stats and track record lead me to believe he's definitely driving the bus offensively more than Spooner. Plus, like others have mentioned, the Bruins have other younger, more dynamic options than Spooner. Spooner has become a PP specialist, who is a defensive liability (pretty much only gets trotted out in the Ozone with 78% of his shifts starting there). Also, his shooting % and 5on5SH% are both sky high. He's due for a correction there.

Not trying to be too much of a homer here. I just don't see Nash as downgrade for the playoff run, nor do I see Spooner as as valuable as other I suppose.

In fantasy, Spooner is possibly the better player. But the Boston Bruins just got a lot better. Spooner is a liability defensively, Nash is simply a much better player. The Bruins also get rid of 1.9 million in dead cap space.... Dumping Beleskeys whole contract would be better of course, but 1.9 is better than 3.8

I don't get this deal for the Bruins. Nash was an overrated player even in his prime. He's a 40-point player now and seems to miss 20 games per season. If I'm acquiring a winger I'm going all-in on Hoffman, not this guy.

The Bruins can't afford Hoffman next season though, unfortunately. Not even $20mil left next season to sign ten players. If they were to put Hoffman's contract in there, they'd be severely handicapped when it came to filling out the roster. I think that's why Sweeney was looking for a pure rental as opposed to someone signed beyond this year.

Just because he's overrated doesn't mean he's a bad player. Nash can still score 25 goals and is one of the best defensive wingers in the league. If he is one of the top players on your team you're in trouble, but if he's a depth player, you're a Cup contender.

At the end of the day this makes playing Boston that much harder.

I don't think anyone thought Boston would do this well this season so why not take a stab at it? Especially since their core is 'older'

Can't agree more with MG.. Older core with a ton of youth surrounding that core.. This trade will give that locker room a huge shot in the arm!!

I can't believe what Boston paid. Uh, no thanks for a 33 year old free agent that is well past his prime with a poor playoff history. I get the move is an improvement but at what cost...
