I still don't like the math behind it. In a 162 game season and the Rays starters being 80% 'inexperienced' That results in ~130 games that you are tossing out an inexperienced starter.
Now with Romo pitching 3 outs in a game, how many times can he do that in a year? 50-55?
So out of 130 games, Romo could potentially start 50-55. How do you know which of those games your inexperienced starter is going to come in and pitch 5 decent innings and give your team a chance to win. Its a guessing game of when to use Romo in a way that you think will lead to a win.
But a manager has more control if he sees how the inexperienced starter does for 5 innings and than at that time makes the decision if Romo will help in a win or if he should use a different reliever.
Ya it's def a work in progress. You need a RP that is willing to come out as a starter, and not just one you would need 3-4 willing to do this once a week lets say.
On paper, the typical pitching staff would be like:
Ace, good pitcher, young pitcher, average pitcher, wild card (either young, old and eats innings, or constantly fluctuating). For your avg/wild card pitcher depending on the match up you'd work your RP as a starter. So 2-3times/week you'd be starting an RP lets say. You'd have 2 RPs maybe who you'd always roll out as your Starting RP?
I dunno, like I said I'm not good enough with this to formulate a gameplan, but I can see the benefits.
