Ok looking to ship Bobrovsky to rebuild for next year.

    Got two offers:

Varlamov and Subban with a 4th for Bobrovsky and a 6th

    or

Jenner and Murray with a 2nd and 4th for Bobrovsky and Rantanen and 7th and 10th

Should I counter, make the deal, or hold?

As far as picks, I have 2 4th rounders along with normal picks.

So, you would consider him a locked keeper?

I can designate based on investment.

    Costs for extra keepers:

    0$ 1st Rounder
    $5 for 2nd
    10$ 3rd
    15$ 4th etc. etc.

Cap is 50$. So if you decide to use your 16th, 17th, 18th pick for extra keepers it would cost you 150$ extra.

I'd keep him for a 3rd or 4th round pick for sure. Like 100th overall

I don't understand your format or whatever it is you are talking about.

As for retooling, I don't get your strategy - how is trading for crappier players retooling?

    Things unclear to me:

    1. How does having extra picks hekp you if you don't use them to keep more players, other than completing your draft earlier?
    2. I understand that anything after the first round costs extra, and you mention a $50 cap. Does that mean you have $50 worth of round value to use for free? It's certainly not a "cap" in the normal sense if you can go over it and spend $150 to keep rounds 16,17, and 18.
    3. How many players do most teams keep? Do the first few rounds mostly vaporize to be replaced by extra keepers every yar?

Stevegamer, alsrevenge, hopefully, my answers will clarify a bit. We switched to this format this year from keep 4 only. I agree the format is not my most desired format, but it is among friends, so I am rolling with it.

    1. Extra picks would help in terms of keeping more players at an affordable cost. I wanted to grab extra picks to keep adding players without dropping a ton of cash.

    1st - 0
    2nd - 5
    3rd - 10
    4th - 15
    5th - 20
    6th - 25
    7th - 30
    8th - 35
    9th - 40
    10th thru 20th - 50

    2. The 50.00 cap refers to anything after round 10, so rounds 10-20 would be 50 bucks a pop.

    3. We implemented this system last fall, so looking at the averages, 8 keepers would be what most teams keep, with many either going 6 or 10. The 4 keepers would be placed in rounds 16-20, while the other keepers would be swapped in for the round you pay for.

My plan is to keep 8 at most.

That helps a lot, especially the round cost breakdown. So if you end up with 2 firsts, 3 seconds, and a third, you could keep your base 4, plus 2 for $0, plus up to 3 at $5 each, and then another one for $10 on top of that if I have that right.

So I would look at things this way:

    Likely keepers:
    MacKinnon / Eichel / Josi / Bobrovsky / Rask / Boeser

    May be keepers:
    Provorov / Rantanen / Aho / Tkachuk / Werenski

    Non - keepers:
    FWD: Horvat / Heinen / Konecny / Beauviller / DeBrincat / Teravanien
    DEF: McDonagh / Gardiner
    G: Khudobin / DeSmith

I'd look at seeing what kinds of talent is in the draft at round 4, since you already have a surplus of picks in that round, and work to determine which of your players would fit in that round next year, knowing what you know now. Once you do that, you can figure out how many extras you keep. Right now, I'm betting you keep between 6-12, as you might end up making some deals where those 4th rounders move up, and make it cheap enough to keep a couple more than anyone did last year.

What I think I would do is be looking to move anyone you're aren't at least on the fence about keeping for pick upgrades. If you need to do Player X, rounds 4 & 8 for Player Y, rounds 3 & 12 - that helps you. It decreases your cost, and you already have 2 extra 4ths.
